Professor Lori Lockyer

Biography

Professor Lori Lockyer joined QUT in 2021 as the Executive Dean of the newly formed Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice (CIESJ). In this role she is responsible for the strategic leadership, governance, and financial management of the Faculty which comprises six schools: Communication; Creative Practice; Design; Early Childhood and Inclusive Education; Justice; and, Teacher Education and Leadership. CIESJ teaches over 10,000  students across faculty and university-wide undergraduate, postgraduate and research courses and employs over 1,100 academic and professional staff, including casual and sessional academic staff.

Lori holds a PhD in Education from the University of Wollongong, a Master of Library and Information Science and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Western Ontario.

Lori is an internationally recognised expert in education and educational technology. Through her research Lori aims to understand how technology can be used to support learning by investigating how educators design learning experiences for their students, how students engage with technology for their learning, and how learning analytics and a range of measures can help to understand educational experiences and outcomes. With collaborators, Lori has attracted in excess of $18M in research funding and her work has been disseminated in more than 150 publications attracting over 5,000 citations. Lori’s research has achieved practical impact through the design and implementation of innovative, award-winning learning environments and the professional development of educators in school, tertiary and professional education settings.

Lori is committed to interdisciplinary research.  To facilitate this, she has contributed to the establishment of a number of large scale, programmatic research collaborations including a nationwide sociobehavoural cancer research network in Canada (1994), a digital media research centre at the University of Wollongong (2000), and a multi-institution science of learning research centre in Australia (2012).

Lori’s research expertise and experience has been recognised through appointments to several key national research committees including the Prime Minister's Science, Engineering and Innovation Council, Transforming Learning and the Transmission of Knowledge Expert Working Group, the Australian Research Council’s College of Experts and ERA Research Evaluation Committees.

Lori has been a leader in the Australian higher education sector for more than two decades.  At the University of Wollongong (1997- 2012), Lori held a number of roles including Associate Dean (Research and Graduate) in the Faculty of Education and contributed to the establishment of the Graduate School of Medicine in the foundational role of Director of Educational Development. At Macquarie University (2012-2016), as Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation Chair in Teacher Education and Head of the School of Education, she provided leadership through a period of significant New South Wales state-based initial teacher education reform. At the University of Technology Sydney (2016-2021), as Dean of the Graduate Research School, Lori led major policy and procedure transformation as well as industry engagement initiatives for higher degree research students across the UTS programs and within the Australian Technology Network of Universities.
