She conducts focus groups, in-depth interviews, and surveys for organisations in nonprofit and government sectors, specialising in stakeholder feedback for the nonprofit sector particularly higher education.
Her special interest is affiliation and support for higher education – and providing feedback from alumni and donors to universities.
She has developed the Barometer of Alumni Sentiment as a collaborative project across Australian universities.
While most of her work is with universities, she has also assisted government on projects including stakeholder feedback around childhood obesity, needs around mental illness and communications issues with nonprofit organisations.
Kym is a qualified Practising Market Researcher with the Australian Market and Social Research Society, and a Member of the Qualitative Research Consultants Association. She holds both a PhD and a Research Masters with Honours. Her postgraduate research explored ways to build support with stakeholder groups.
In her work today, Kym draws upon her experience as both an academic and researcher, and brings a deep understanding of the dynamics of universities as well as the factors shaping higher education today.
She has worked as a university lecturer and university researcher for some 20 years - within the Faculty of Business at Queensland University of Technology. For the first ten years, she taught and researched in the field of communications and for the second, in the area of philanthropy and nonprofit studies.
She was Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies at QUT for over eight years. During her University tenure, Kym met and worked with academics and researchers across all Faculties, serving on the University’s professional development leave committee for almost a decade.
Prior to becoming an academic, Kym worked in communications and marketing. Previous employers include the Building Owners and Managers Association (now the Property Council of Australia) and law firm Morris, Fletcher & Cross (now Minter Ellison).
Kym’s approach to research is always to probe for authentic responses, and to get to actionable results for organisations. From her exposure to marketing and communication, she takes the larger picture of relationship-building, working with the client/customer point of view. Her aim is to help organisations make best sense of, and use, research findings with the resources they have to build productive relationships and collaborations.
