Biography
Joel Stern is a sound artist, researcher and curator based in Brisbane.Joel is currently Associate Lecturer in Music at QUT, where his work has been marked by a high level of academic initiative and engagement with students, many of whom have begun performing publicly and publishing new work under his guidance.As a researcher, Joel has focused on the significant historical links between film and sound in the experimental arts. In the course of this research, he has interviewed key international figures in the field presented new and historical work to Australian and international audiences.As an artist, Joel he is one of Australia's foremost practitioners in exploratory, electronic and improvised sound, performing regularly at key Australian and international festivals in this area. Joel's sound work has been published by leading labels in Australia, NZ, UK, USA and Japan to critical acclaim. His recent solo CD, Objects Masks Props, has been described as 'the future of pop music in a post-apocalyptic, electricity starved world.' (Cyclic Defrost Magazine)Joel has also been extremely active in the fields of audiovisual art and sound installation. His film-sound work has been screened at Cannes International Film Festival, London Film Festival, Brisbane International Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival and his sound-sculptural-installations have received accolades in high profile events such as Brisbane International Arts Festival and Liquid Architecture.As a curator and producer Joel has founded organisations that have delivered successful festivals, publications, concerts, screenings and art happenings, and have received funding support from the Australia Council and other bodies.
OtherFilm, which he co-founded in 2004, has staged three major festivals (2004, 2006, 2007) of expanded and experimental cinema in Brisbane at the Institute of Modern Art and in Melbourne at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. Audiopollen, a collective he co-founded in 2006, has produced over 80 programs of avant-garde and unusual music and art in Brisbane, and has become a key site for collaboration and development for Brisbane's emerging cultural sector.
