Biography
Emma Potter-Hay is a Research Assistant in the QUT Business School and a Sessional Academic in the QUT Digital Media Research Centre. She completed her undergraduate degree with First Class Honours in Media and Communication and Political Science at the University of Canterbury. She completed her PhD (Broadcast, promote, respond, engage: Competing understandings of the purpose and value of social media in an emergency management organisation) through the Digital Media Research Centre in early-2017. Her research was part of the ARC Linkage project ‘Social Media in Times of Crisis: Learning from Recent Natural Disasters to Improve Future Strategies’, and involved an ethnographic study of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), where she spent two years observing and participating in their use of social media. Emma has a professional background in marketing and communications. She is currently involved in research projects at the QUT Business School that examine public communication during crises, and developing new ways of measuring research impact.
