Biography
Adele Webb is a political scientist lecturing in Politics and Policy at QUT's School of Justice. Adele's research is in the areas of Southeast Asian politics, Philippine political history, Post-colonial studies and Democratic theory. She teaches undergraduate courses in Political Practice, People Power and Protest and Critical Policy Analysis, and she is an affiliated investigator in the Centre for Justice.Adele holds a PhD in Government and International Relations (University of Sydney 2019) and an MSc in Political Sociology (London School of Economics 2012). Previously she held visiting research fellowships at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) Germany and Institute of Political Culture (IPC), Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines, and research and teaching positions at the University of Sydney, Heidelberg University (Germany) and Griffith University.
Adele is author of Chasing Freedom: The Philippines' Long Journey to Democratic Ambivalence (Sussex Academic Press 2022 & Ateneo de Manila University Press [Philippine edition] 2022). Her work has been published in edited volumes including Populism Around the World (Springer 2019) and The Duterte Reader (Cornell University Press 2017), and in peer-reviewed journals including Democratic Theory, Philippine Sociological Review, and Development In Practice.
Alongside her academic work, Adele maintains an active profile in public engagement, providing commentary on Philippine politics and geopolitics for The Australian Broadcasting Corporation, The Washington Post, The Associated Press, The Lowy Institute and The Australian Institute of International Affairs. She has consulted for the United Nations Economic and Social Commission on Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the Griffith Asia Institute (GAI), and prior to working in academia she worked as an advocate in the global justice movement, including five years as director of Sydney-based research and advocacy NGO Jubilee Australia.
