13th May 2014

Experts in food and nutrition policy from around the country will come together to discuss ways to improve diet-related health outcomes for Australians at QUT's Gardens Point campus tomorrow (Wednesday, May 14).

The seminar, hosted by QUT's School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA), and the Heart Foundation, is being held in conjunction with the Dietitians Association of Australia 31st National Conference.

The seminar focusing on Navigating through nutrition policy in Australia has attracted some of the nation's leading public health experts, looking to showcase and debate new ideas.

Key speakers at the event include:
* Professor Heather Yeatman, president of the PHAA
* Barbara Eden, senior manager of Food Supply with the Heart Foundation
* Christel Leemhuis, director of the Food Policy Section in the Australian Government Department of Health
* Professor Amanda Lee from QUT

Among the hot topics to be discussed at the event will be policies to tackle diet-related health problems as well as the impact of obesity and poor nutrition on physical and economic health - particularly the links with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and cancer.

PHAA president Professor Heather Yeatman said changes that support people's healthy food choices were urgently required.

"The implementation of initiatives such as the Health Star Rating system for food labelling is one part of broader measures that can be implemented to combat escalating health and economic costs from weight-related diseases," she said.
