QUT Professor Susan Street appointed Qld Art Gallery chair

10 August 2012

QUT's Professor Susan Street has been appointed chair of the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) board of trustees.

Professor Street is executive director of QUT Precincts, which encompasses the University's arts venues including the William Robinson Gallery and the QUT Art Museum.

She was formerly the executive dean of QUT's Creative Industries Faculty and head of Dance at QUT for ten years.

Professor Street said the appointment was a great honour: "I have very big shoes to fill. Professor John Hay was a much admired and skilful chair".

She said she wanted to build on the momentum of community outreach the Gallery was already known for and increase collaboration with Southbank's other cultural institutions including the Queensland Centre for Performing Arts.

"QAGOMA has designed and delivered outstanding engagement activities for young people and a strong outreach and regional touring program," Professor Street said.

"Queensland exclusives such as the current Portrait of Spain serve to profile Brisbane as a significant cultural city and provide high calibre international exhibitions for a growing audience. Visitation to the gallery grew by over 200,000 in the years 2010 - 2011."

Professor Street said the priority for the Board was to recruit a director to replace Tony Ellwood.
