The Law Founders Scholarship Appeal has kicked off and we're inviting you to donate to support students who need financial help to stay at university. Meet 2010 recipient Kasey Solar and hear how the scholarship changed her life.
"From a young age I experienced first-hand what it was like to grow up in a family affected by a loved one's alcohol addiction," Kasey explains.
" I struggled throughout high school trying to balance school and a part-time job.
"Although I had some emotional support, I had to support myself financially and work to help pay the household bills.
"Moving out of home was very tough. I was constantly worrying about how to juggle money, time, studying, trying to find a job and a secure place to live.
"Being awarded the Law Founders Scholarship during my first year of uni took the pressure off so many areas in my life and after that, everything just fell into place.
"It made all the difference in the world to me and I felt a wonderful sense of relief that I would be able to afford to stay at university. The money helped me to buy a computer and move to Brisbane from the Gold Coast to be closer to uni.
"To all the people who donated to make this possible, thank you - I will be forever grateful. You are helping me to realise my dream of combining my law and justice degrees to help people - one day, I hope, as a human rights lawyer for the United Nations.
The Law Founders Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to enable economically disadvantaged first-year law students to succeed.
The generosity of QUT Law alumni established the Law Founders Scholarship Program in 1997, as a special way of celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the QUT Law School.
The need for support grows stronger each year.
Each year we are faced with a difficult decision in choosing the most deserving students.
We currently only have enough funding to support up to four students through a combination of full and half scholarships, but we have many more students applying for scholarships than we can support.
Our goal is to be able to award up to eight scholarships every year to students like Kasey.
