QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake has welcomed a new partnership with the State Government that will see a new high school, QUT City School, open its doors to students in 2020.
Professor Coaldrake said the new state secondary school would be built at the former Fortitude Valley State School site.
He said QUT would establish a Centre for Excellence for teaching in the school and have significant input into the development of curriculum for the school as well as co-curricular activities.
“Being a partner in this venture enables QUT to develop curricular that has a focus on entrepreneurship and innovation,” Professor Coaldrake said.
“QUT already has strong connections with the Fortitude Valley and New Farm business incubator and start-up communities and is well placed to extend these connections to the new high school community.”
Professor Coaldrake said as a recognised leader in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), QUT would provide the Valley school with a unique emphasis on teaching in these areas and enhance student an understanding of the important role these subject play in innovation.
He said students would also be provided with opportunities for immersion in Mandarin Chinese through the QUT Confucius Institute.
“This is very exciting news for QUT that will further underline the university’s linkages with the school sector and the broader community,” Professor Coaldrake said.
