QUT has awarded the title of Distinguished Professor to Professor Dietmar Hutmacher for his outstanding achievement in the challenging transdisciplinary field of biomedical engineering.

The rare title follows another accolade for Professor Hutmacher earlier this year when The European Society of Biomaterials awarded him its highest honour, the International Award, in recognition of his profile and significant contributions to the field of biomaterials.

Distinguished Professor Hutmacher is Professor and Chair of Regenerative Medicine at QUT’s Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI), and director of the Centre in Regenerative Medicine at the ARC Training Centre in Additive Biomanufacturing where, as at IHBI, he has built a multidisciplinary research team that includes engineers, cell biologists, polymer chemists, and clinicians.

QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake said Professor Hutmacher is recognised as one of the top 50 researchers in his field internationally.

“This title recognizes Distinguished Professor Hutmacher’s past and current achievements and also the potential for ongoing excellence,” Professor Coaldrake said.

“Dietmar Hutmacher is a national and international leader in biomedical engineering who has delivered real results in regenerative medicine.

“He has a great capacity for nurturing emerging talent and attracting talented PhD students, at the same time, creating pathways to commercialization of intellectual property.”

Distinguished Professor Hutmacher’s ability to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries and initiate and nurture research, as well as develop international educational programs across different disciplines, has consolidated his worldwide reputation as a pioneer of biomaterials and tissue engineering regenerative medicine.

He has published more than 300 journal articles, edited 14 books, 40 book chapters and more than 500 conference abstracts. He has some 20,000 citations, earning him an h-index of 68 and 10 patents and four spin-off companies.

Originally trained as an engineer, Distinguished Professor Hutmacher’s career began  a mere 20 years ago and is one of only a handful of academics in the field of biomaterials/tissue engineering to have taken a research program from fundamental research through to clinical application utilizing research in-vitro, in-vivo, preclinical models and clinical trials.
