- The Australian published a piece by Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake on how young universities can help the higher education sector thrive in the future. It came on the eve of The Times Higher Education (THE) Young Universities Summit, hosted by QUT.
- QUT moved up four places to be ranked 24th in the world in the 2017 THE Young University rankings, which was reported by Fairfax media, including Brisbane Times and The Financial Review, Campus Morning Mail, Campus Review, The Australian, 4ZZZ and news.com.au.
- QUT’s hosting of the Young Universities Summit was covered by The Australian and Times Higher Education. And the keynote address from Professor Carla Brodley (pictured) was reported by Times Higher Education and Campus Morning Mail, Professor Timothy Tong’s keynote was covered by Times Higher Education, Professor Maria Klawe’s address made the Campus Morning Mail, and Campus Review covered Professor Martin Paul (pictured) and assistant minister for vocational education and skills, Karen Andrews.
- The Huffington Post referenced QUT research led by Professor Selena Bartlett in a story about how sugar is America’s drug of choice.
- Dr Emad Kiriakous commented on the Syrian chemical attack for Scimex.
- Professor Hilary Bambrick talked to the Times of Malta about climate change and public health after addressing a conference in Malta.
- The Global Plant Council, EnvironmentGuru and SeedQuest published research involving Professor Sagadevan Mundree and Dr Brett Williams on ‘resurrection plants’.
- QUT guest and MIT Bootcamp key speaker and roboticist Dr Rodney Brooks was on ABC Brisbane with Steve Austin.
- Distinguished Professor Stuart Cunningham was interviewed by Philip Adams on Radio National about Hollywood and the movie business being killed off by new media and players like Netflix.
- Auto Talk, Car Advice and Energy Source Distribution and Space Daily ran Dr Kenan Degirmenci’s research on what attracts consumers to electric cars.
- ABC Radio Sydney’s regular segment Science with Bill Lott focused on future careers for young scientists and mathematicians.
- Associate Professor Michael Dezuanni was on ABC TV, ABC Radio and ABC online talking about Minecraft’s educational value for kids.
- Dr Edwina Luck was interviewed by 9 News about loyalty cards and shopper reward schemes.
- Dr Helen Vidgen (pictured) was part of an ABC Radio PM discussion on childhood obesity. Her research was also covered by AAP, 9 News, SBS, Sky News, 4BC, 2CC Canberra, 2GB, 3AW Melbourne, 5AA Adelaide, 6PR Perth, 8HA Alice Springs, The Northern Territory News, The Courier Mail and the I Quit Sugar Blog.
- News Corp wrote a national story about the 30th anniversary of the ABC’s iconic music show Rage and interviewed former producer Narelle Gee who wrote a QUT thesis on the show.
- Dr Amanda Mergler wrote a piece for The Conversation questioning school uniforms and was interviewed on ABC Radio Sydney and 6PR Perth.
- Dr Mary Crawford joined Steve Austin for her weekly segment on ABC Radio Brisbane, where she covered topics including the Adani coal mine, human rights in India and Pauline Hanson.
- QUT creative writing student Hanna Sloan wrote a piece for Fashion Weekly on the five milestones every 20-something reaches.
- Energy Source and Distribution Magazine reported on a three-way partnership between Siemens, Defence Science and Technology Group, and QUT to share high-temperature superconductor technology and research.
- ArchitectureAU reported on the principles of effective housing as highlighted in last week’s 2017 Asia Pacific Architecture Forum which involved QUT.
- Radio National covered a study of Australian Vietnam veterans and PTSD by a team that included researchers from QUT IHBI and UQ. It also appeared in The Courier Mail and Cairns Post.
- News of San Francisco 3D bioprinter startup Aether’s research collaboration with QUT was reported by American media including NBC2, Seattlepi and The Chron.
- MIT Bootcamper James O’Driscoll featured in Ireland’s West Cork Times which reported on his innovative app designed to prevent heat stroke.
- Drs Matthew Dunbabin and Feras Dayoub’s COTSbot robot was mentioned in articles in The Atlantic and NextGov about environmental robotics, and on VICE News (16.10).
- A QUT and Cancer Council study calling for Queenslanders to take part in a research examining medical decisions by and for people with terminal illnesses was in papers including the Gold Coast Sun.
- A joint study involving QUT that looked at the untapped potential of children in care and the need to provide them with higher education opportunities featured in The Australian.
- AFR reported on QUT CEA providing capital for an online art marketplace for remote Indigenous communities.
- The Courier-Mail wrote about QUT dance alumnus Natalie Weir’s latest work for Expressions Dance Company.
- The Courier-Mail’s Qweekend profiled Brisbane Bullet Jarred Bairstow who is combining basketball with studying biomedical and mechanical engineering at QUT, and musician Zoe Fox who is studying creative industries and business.
- Creative industries alumnus Michaela McGuire’s appointment as festival director of the Sydney Writers’ Festival was covered by the Sydney Morning Herald and regional NSW Fairfax papers.
- Townsville Bulletin profiled local designer and QUT graduate Jack Milne.
- Dr Chris Watling’s school holiday warning for drivers to plan their journey featured widely including in the Gatton Lockyer Brisbane Valley Star and North Lakes Messenger.
- Yass Tribune ran a story about Nepalese council members visiting QUT as part of their leadership and risk management course in Australia.
- BMag featured a story on QUT’s creative industries students taking part in a light-up art installation celebrating the Ekka’s iconic strawberry sundae.
- ABC Brisbane radio and ABC News asked Professor Ashantha Goonetilleke about the proposed expansion of Wivenhoe Dam.
- Susan Hetherington was on ABC Capricornia for her regular family affairs segment talking all things babies including names, crying and infertility.
