For the first time at QUT, a husband and wife have been awarded Honorary Doctorates, the University’s highest honorary award.

Rhonda and Terry White, leaders in Australia’s community pharmacy industry, have each received the degree of Doctor of the University from QUT.

The pair both graduated as Pharmacists from Central Technical College, a predecessor institution to QUT.

Terry White opened his first pharmacy in 1958 at Woody Point, while Rhonda White opened her own pharmacy at Clontarf in 1964. Today, the Terry White Chemists group is the largest pharmacy network in Australia with some 500 pharmacies nationwide.

QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake said QUT had awarded 12 Honorary Doctorates in the past five years, the honour recognising the most significant contributions to the community.

“QUT has recognised Mrs White’s distinguished service to the community and the significant contributions she has made to the pharmacy profession, including the education of pharmacists and retail practices,” he said.

“Mr White is also acknowledged for his distinguished service to the community, in particular through public office, and the leadership roles he has played within the pharmacy profession.”

Rhonda and Terry White were previously inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame and in 2014 Terry White received a QUT Outstanding Alumni Award for the Faculty of Health.
