You will be pushed to your limit. You will learn. You will have fun.

QUT has been selected to host the MIT Global Entrepreneurship Bootcamp at Gardens Point campus in Brisbane in March, 2017.

The highly-selective camp condenses a one year MIT course into a week-long, action-based learning experience for budding entrepreneurs picked from across the world.

Applicants must apply to MIT by the latest January 31, 2017 and selection is based on five criteria - rigor, initiative, contribution to community, team and cultural fit and entrepreneurship potential.

QUT Vice-Chancellor Peter Coaldrake said the university was proud to have been selected to host the bootcamp.

The partnership between, QUT, MIT and the Queensland Government means QUT will offer three scholarships to attend the bootcamp, including one specifically for an Indigenous Australian.

“We have been building an entrepreneurial focus across the university for some time now and staging the bootcamp at our Gardens Point campus will allow us to take this to the next level,” Professor Coaldrake said.

“The Queensland Government and Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy and Minister for Small Business Leeanne Enoch are to be commended for this forward-thinking initiative.”

Professor Rowena Barrett, Head of the School of Management at QUT, said Brisbane was chosen for its “vibrancy” and “buzz”.

“It puts Brisbane on the world stage as a global hub of innovation and entrepreneurship with the event rarely held outside of Boston,” she said.

MIT Senior Lecturer at the Sloan School of Management Bill Aulet said demand for entrepreneurship globally is exploding and in turn the demand for high quality entrepreneurship education.

“In this arrangement QUT will benefit from MIT’s proven methodologies and MIT will benefit from gaining additional experience in a different context,” he said.

“The region will benefit by having a new crop of superbly trained entrepreneurs.

“By embracing innovative changes to learning, teaching and research, QUT is developing graduates who can choose to be entrepreneurs in applying their discipline skills and knowledge to solve future global challenges.”

Classes are led by Bill Aulet, author of the book, Disciplined Entrepreneurship, and Managing Director of the Martin Trust Centre for Entrepreneurship at MIT.

Other MIT faculty including Charles Fine, Chrysler Leader for Operations Professor, Eric von Hippel, T. Wilson (1953) Professor in Management, Steven Eppinger, General Motors LGO Professor of Management, Sanjay Sarma, Fred Fort Flowers (1941) and Daniel Fort Flowers (1941) Professor of Management, Elaine Chen, Senior Lecturer at MIT Sloan School of Management, Jim Dougherty, Senior Lecturer at MIT Sloan School of Management, have also taught and mentored participants at the Bootcamp, and Anton Garcia-Abril, Professor at the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT.

The Bootcamp also featured such high profile speakers as Alan G. Spoon, Board Member of the MIT Corporation, Partner Emeritus at Polaris Partners and former President of the Washington Post Company, Anant Agarwal, CEO of edX and Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, and Paul English, entrepreneur and philanthropist, who co-founded Kayak.com.

Professor Barrett said QUT was selected by MIT as partner for the bootcamp as the university is known for its triple-crown Business School, Australian Centre for Robotic Vision and big data initiatives as well as The Cube – the world's largest digital interactive learning and display space dedicated to providing an inspiring, explorative and participatory experience of QUT's Science and Engineering research.
