Best known for designing the 3-Minute Nutrition Screening tool to help identify those at risk of malnutrition, Singaporean Dr Lim Su Lin was named winner of a QUT Outstanding Alumni Special Excellence Award at a ceremony in Brisbane today.

The annual QUT Outstanding Alumni Awards recognise outstanding graduates of the university (and predecessor institutions), who have displayed exceptional professional, academic or research achievements and contributions to the community.

Dr Lim is widely recognised as an innovator and leader in the field of nutrition and dietetics, having developed new tools to screen and treat patients that have been adopted across Singapore and Asia.

As one of the first dietetic practitioners in Singapore to undertake a PhD, Dr Su Lin completed her QUT doctoral studies as a part-time, external student in conjunction with her role as chief dietitian and senior assistant director of the Dietetics Department at the National University Hospital (NUH) in Singapore.

Dr Lim’s research resulted in a QUT Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award and eight publications, including a highly cited paper in a Q1 clinical nutrition journal.

Most importantly, the outcomes of Dr Lim’s project have been translated into practice and improved the services of the National University Hospital and many other hospitals.

With more than 20 years’ experience as a clinical dietitian, Dr Lim’s 3-Minute Nutrition Screening tool is now used by every patient admitted to the National University Hospital to identify those at risk of malnutrition and ensure appropriate referral and treatment.

It has been widely implemented across Singapore and Malaysia, including at hospitals, nursing homes and day-care centres.

Dr Lim has also developed the first post-discharge ambulatory nutrition support service in Singapore, resulting in improved patient outcomes and lower re-admission rates.

Her other pioneering achievements include the Expedited 10g Protein Counter, the Diabetes Control Programme and the Cholesterol Lowering Program.

As a strong believer in public education on health issues, Dr Lim conducts lectures and programs to promote healthy lifestyles and chronic disease prevention.

Dr Lim’s work has earned her numerous awards, including the Singapore National Day Efficiency Medal (2007), Singapore Public Service Excellence Award (2011) and NUHS-Mochtar Riady Pinnacle Excellence Award (2015).

She is a four-time winner of the Singapore Allied Health Award for best oral presentation (2009-2013), and won NHG Best Oral Presentation (2006) and NHG Young Investigator’s Award (2007).
