Nambour’s Old Ambulance Station is the venue for a gathering of young female entrepreneurs dedicated to tackling social issues on March 12 & 13. The QUT event is part of Queensland Women’s Week celebrations and offers a range of free activities and workshops.
The Engendering Creative Social Entrepreneurship for Young Women in Regional Queensland event invites established and up-and-coming social entrepreneurs aged 15-34 from the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane to share ideas and increase skills.
“Women are under-represented when it comes to start-up founders and this event aims to address that by celebrating and inspiring regional women,” said organiser Dr Jaz Hee-jeong Choi, Deputy Director, Urban Informatics Research Lab and Senior Lecturer with the School of Design, QUT Creative Industries.
“It’s free to attend and includes presentations by a range of inspirational female creative social entrepreneurs, a market featuring local enterprises, hands-on workshops covering digital literacy, design, finance, social media and creative, plus ‘walkshops’ and a forum to co-discover ways to create ecologies for innovation and economic engagement of young women with social agendas.
“Presenters include multidisciplinary artist Yasmin Bridges who goes by the name of ‘Awkward Chat’, Lisa Fry from the Nambour Alliance, youth arts advocate and founder of the Sunshine Coast’s School of Dramatic Arts Mary Eggleston, digital creative Irina Anastasiu, and Dr Tamsin Kerr, Director of the Cooroora Institute.
“It’s a celebration of women and what they can achieve when given the skills and opportunity, as well as a chance for young women to connect, increase their knowledge and share ideas and experiences.”
The event, which opens at 9am on Saturday and Sunday, is supported by the Queensland Government and YWCA as part of the 2016 Women’s Week Initiative with the theme: Good for her. Great for us. When women achieve, Queensland succeeds.
