Gao Shan brings New Zealand and China experience to CIQ
CIQ Volunteer Chinese Teacher, Gao Shan, has been using her significant skills and experience, gained in both China and New Zealand, to provide essential tutoring for CIQ’s community short course programs.
Shan is from Beijing and has a Master’s Degree from the China University of Petroleum in Beijing and has already gained valuable international teaching experience as a Volunteer Chinese Teacher with the Confucius Institute at Canterbury University, New Zealand. Working with four primary schools, one kindergarten and one high school in Queenstown, Shan taught Chinese language and culture with enthusiasm that inspired her students.
Like all of our 2020 Volunteer Chinese teachers, Shan has been unable to join us in Brisbane. However, she quickly overcame this disappointment and went to work, providing online tutoring for CIQ’s adult short course students, as well as assisting with new course development. So far, she has tutored 18 adult students with great student feedback. A truly amazing effort!
Gao Shan has also been providing special Chinese language lessons, using Zoom, for students at the Cleveland Sate High School, a CIQ Confucius Classroom school.
Dr Song Hongling, Visiting Chinese Teacher and CIQ Short Course Teaching Coordinator is grateful for her professional support. He said, ‘Gao Shan has worked hard to provide high quality individual tutoring for our short course students. The feedback from the students has been very positive and are pleased that the tutoring provides an opportunity to practise the new vocabulary and grammar. The tutoring builds on the class work and Gao Shan provides a different insight into each unit.’
Gao Shan said ‘I am very grateful to be part of the innovative, inspiring and cohesive CIQ team. This wonderful experience has not just been teaching but also learning and acquiring valuable, new knowledge. The opportunity to provide online tutoring has been a challenge but enjoyable and has allowed me to develop a new set of teaching skills. It is great to work with Dr Song, Ms Li Ping and Chinese teacher Ms Ivy Tang, from Cleveland District State High School’.
