Why study visual arts at QUT?

Our visual arts course can help you find your niche in the burgeoning art scene by supporting you to define and shape your creative identity. Through our unique open-studio environment, you will focus on contemporary art practices without being divided up into separate media-specific areas, such as painting or sculpture.

This distinctive cross-disciplinary approach to studying art encourages the fluid, self directed investigation necessary to most contemporary arts practice.

Whether you are planning to become a professional artist, teacher or art professional such as curator or arts manager, you will benefit from substantial studio experience while receiving training in your specialist area.

Our graduates have developed exciting and innovative artist-run initiatives in Brisbane with regular exhibitions, artist talks and publications:

  • BoxCopy
  • No Frills*
  • Inbetween Spaces
  • Accidentally Annie Street.

Five of our graduates have received the Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship, while others have received:
Queensland Premier's New Media Award

  • Qantas Spirit of Youth Award
  • German DAAD scholarship
  • numerous international studio residencies.

Our students study in the Creative Industries Precinct, Australia's first site dedicated to experimentation and commercial development in the creative industries, equipped with unique open-studio environments and interactive exhibition spaces for multimedia displays.

Career outcomes

Many of our graduates with a visual arts degree become highly successful practising artists who are represented by commercial galleries and have strong careers in the commissioned and public funding sectors. With specialist training in a related field, our graduates also take up positions as creative directors, visual designers and a range of other occupations in the creative industries sector. If taken in combination with a Graduate Diploma in Education (Senior Years), you can become a qualified teacher.
