Why study interior design at QUT?
As a QUT design student, you'll be part of a vibrant, multidisciplinary school with excellent connections to the real world of design professions. Our interior design graduates excel in the real world, and are in high demand within multi-disciplinary firms in the design and construction industries, retail, theatre and exhibition design, interaction design, gaming and virtual environments. If you are committed and passionate about design, you will thrive in our engaging and fulfilling design courses.
Interior design at QUT has strong connections to local industry, employing award-winning practitioners as tutors, and promoting student work in prominent public settings. Our courses prepare you for a career in an increasingly diverse field that embraces small and large scale design in both real and virtual environments, and extends into new and emergent fields that demand the spatial thinking skills of interior designers.
Interior design is one of a suite of design disciplines fundamental to the creative industries, and is based on an industry-focused combination of creativity, communication, technology, and business enterprise. As an interior designer you’ll apply your theoretical knowledge of how people interact with environments psychologically and socially, and learn to work as part of a team that may include architects, builders, project managers, engineering consultants, shopfitters, cabinet makers, furniture suppliers and materials suppliers.
Our interior design courses feature unique real-world project and studio-based learning. Your studies will be supported by new digital technologies, well-equipped workshops and design studios, and our design fabrication labs provide a space for hands-on prototyping of designs - from models to full-scale material constructs and digital animations. You’ll learn to create environments including custom designed furniture, with consideration to purpose, efficiency, comfort, safety and aesthetics.
Our internationally recognised Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) integrates design with social and environmental issues. Links across other design areas within the Creative Industries Faculty facilitate digital design, virtual and interactive environments and provide broader career opportunities. You can diversify your study with selected minors or a second major area of study, giving you further career options. You’ll also have the opportunity to combine meaningful, professional workplace activities with academic learning, assessment and support with our Work Integrated Learning program.
Collaborate with the design community through public lectures, student-run exhibitions and off-campus and international study tours to European design capitals such as Italy, Switzerland, Germany and France.
Career outcomes
Our graduates work independently or in small or large practices. Others elect to work in multidisciplinary firms specialising in large-scale complex architectural projects, both locally and internationally. Other career areas include retail, theatre and exhibition design, particularly gallery or museum settings. Exciting new areas include interaction design, gaming and virtual environments - specialist areas requiring high visualisation skills.
Further expertise within the discipline can be achieved through postgraduate study leading to senior roles within practice or an academic career.
