Why study industrial design at QUT?
As a QUT design student, you'll be part of a vibrant, multidisciplinary school with excellent connections to real world design professions. Our industrial design graduates excel in the real world and have an outstanding record of achievement nationally and globally. If you are committed and passionate about design, you will thrive in our engaging and fulfilling design courses.
Industrial designers play a part in the creation of the thousands of products people use each day, in all walks of life. At QUT you will develop the capacity to contribute to the design of products and systems for the mutual benefit of users and manufacturers - products that make people’s lives safer, happier, more efficient and fun. You’ll also learn to think in terms of the context in which products exist and the experience of using them. Industrial design requires an understanding of technology and innovation, people and society, design process and problem solving; then applied skills to bring these things together to create innovative, attractive, sustainable and useful products and systems that are viable to produce and distribute.
Industrial design is one of a suite of Design disciplines fundamental to the creative industries, and is based on an industry-focused combination of creativity, communication, technology, and business enterprise. As an industrial designer you’ll engage in creating innovative, attractive, sustainable and user-friendly products and systems.
Our industrial design courses feature unique real-world project and studio-based learning. Your studies will be supported by new digital technologies, well-equipped workshops and design studios, and our design fabrication labs provide a space for hands-on prototyping of designs. You’ll learn the technical aspects of design, design management, CAID (computer-aided industrial design) technology, ergonomics, aesthetics, marketing and design leadership.
In our Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) you can diversify your study with selected minors or a second major area of study, giving you further career options. You’ll also have the opportunity to combine meaningful, professional workplace activities with academic learning, assessment and support with our Work Integrated Learning program.
Collaborate with the design community through public lectures, student-run exhibitions and off-campus and international study tours to European design capitals such as Italy, Switzerland, Germany and France.
Career outcomes
Our graduates work as industrial designers, usability experts, interaction designers, product developers, interface designers, corporate identity designers, model makers, special effects producers, design managers, design researchers and computer aided design experts. Further expertise within the discipline can be achieved through postgraduate study leading to senior roles within practice or an academic career.
