When can I start language study?
Check your recommended enrolment program in your course summary to see when you can start language study in your degree.
If you're unsure when you are able to start language study, you should consult with your faculty for enrolment advice. Contact details are in your course summary.
Language second majors
If you're permitted to undertake a Language second major (6 subjects or 72 credit points) in your degree (or are undertaking a LOTE major in the Bachelor of Education) you should commence your language study in the first semester of your degree, so you can complete the requirements of the Second Major/LOTE major within three years
Language subjects/enrolment
Your language proficiency determines the subject you will start your language study in.
Most language areas offer enrolment streams (programs) for students commencing at introductory level, post-secondary or advanced level.

You should also review UQ or Griffith's subject outlines for content and assessment information as well as semester offerings of subjects.
Access Griffith's unit outlines
When selecting a subject, you must ensure that you meet pre-requisite requirements for enrolment or have been granted permission to enrol via a placement interview.
Placement interviews
If you've already completed language study or have knowledge of the language, you must attend a placement interview at UQ or Griffith.
In the interview your proficiency level will be assessed to determine the appropriate subject for you to study first.
If you completed high-school language studies more than five years ago and are commencing your first language subject at university, you must attend a placement interview.
You can also undertake a placement interview if you are unsure which subject to study first.
