Cross-institute languages enrolment
If you wish to study a language other than Mandarin you can enrol as a cross-institutional student at Griffith University (GU) or The University of Queensland (UQ).
Enrolment process
You are encouraged to apply as soon as possible so your application can be processed in time for the commencement of semester. Applications submitted after the on time due date may be considered up to the commencement of semester however late enrolment fees may apply.
Complete an on-line enrolment application at Brisbane Universities Languages Hub (BULH)
On submission of your on-line application you will receive an automatically generated email confirming receipt of your application. This will be sent to the email address you nominate on your application form.
Your application will be assessed by QUT and the host university (GU or UQ), which will take approximately two weeks.
If your application is approved by the host university (UQ or GU) they will issue an admission offer notice. This will include a student number and password and you will be provided with enrolment and fee information.
If your application is not approved you will receive a notice of rejection by QUT, UQ or GU.
Language units are generally only offered in either semester one or semester two each year. You will need to take this into consideration when planning your enrolment.
Important conditions
Students must meet the host university's pre-requisite requirements for enrolment. Students are responsible for ensuring they are permitted to undertake a language unit in their course according to their course structure requirements.
Upon admission to the host university, you must officially enrol in the approved language unit via the host university's on-line enrolment system.
Information on how to enrol will be provided to you by the host university.
You will be required to attend lectures and tutorials at the campus on which the unit is offered.
To cancel your enrolment in the language unit/s you will be responsible for withdrawing your enrolment at the host university and will be subject to their withdrawal without academic penalty and financial penalties calendar dates.
Students must comply with the host university's rules and academic calendar dates.
Fee information
Students enrolled in language units cross institutionally will be liable for either tuition fees or a student contribution at the host university. Please do not pay any tuition fees for your language unit enrolment at QUT.
Domestic students
If you are a Commonwealth Supported student you must, at enrolment, complete an online Request for Commonwealth Support and HECS-HELP form. You must also provide the host university with your Tax File Number (TFN) if deferring your payment through tax. You should also provide your TFN as a safety-net if you are paying up-front.
If you are a domestic tuition fee paying student, and would like to apply for FEE-HELP assistance for your language unit/s, you will need to complete a 'Request for FEE-HELP Assistance' form by the host university's census date.
If you are either a Commonwealth Supported or domestic tuition fee paying student and elect to pay your fees up-front, you will be required to pay your tuition fees directly to the host university by the required due date. If you fail to meet the due date, you may be charged a late payment fee or your enrolment may be cancelled.
International students
If you are an international student, you will be required to pay your tuition fees directly to the host university by the required due date. If you fail to meet the due date, you may be charged a late payment fee or your enrolment may be cancelled.
Recognition of studies
From semester 2011, on successful completion of cross institutional enrolment at the host university (grade of 4 or above) you will be awarded an exemption (advanced standing/academic credit) on your academic record at QUT. The grade awarded for the language unit at the Host University (UQ or GU) will appear on your QUT Academic Record and will contribute to your course GPA.
If you do not successfully complete your language enrolment, you will not be awarded an exemption at QUT and the grade will not be reflected on your QUT academic record.
You will not be required to submit an application for advanced standing on completion of your language enrolment. At the end of each semester QUT will arrange for your advanced standing to be applied on your Academic Record at QUT after your results have been published by the Host University (UQ or GU). This will take approximately one week for this to occur.
Unit outlines, timetables, calendars and exams
The timetable for language units can be accessed through the university's websites.
Final exams for subjects will be offered according the host university's academic calendar. The examination timetable for language units will not appear in your QUT virtual exam profile. You will be required to review your language examination timetable at the host university.
Cross institutional students will not be eligible for supplementary assessment at the Host University (UQ or GU).
The University of Queensland and Griffith University class allocation system is generally available two weeks prior to the commencement of semester. You will be required to be officially enrolled in your approved language unit at the host university to be able to access their class allocation system.
Resources, ID Card and intercampus travel
You should obtain a student ID card from the host university to access their resources (e.g. borrow library books). Refer university websites for transport information.
