Fundamentals of Wound Care

Pre-requisites

Nil.

Course outline

This two day workshop combines theory, practical workshop exercises and case studies to help you develop a greater understanding of:

  • wound assessment and management
  • dressing selection
  • evidence-based interventions for acute and chronic wounds
  • preventative strategies.

Advanced Wound Care

Pre-requisites

Completion of the Fundamentals of Wound Care workshop.

Course outline

This workshop is designed to increase your understanding of the pathophysiological processes involved in wound repair and regeneration, and to facilitate the implementation of evidence into clinical practice. 

Develop your understanding of:

  • the impact of physical, psychosocial and environmental factors on the wound healing process
  • the principles of wound assessment and wound management for specific wound types
  • the composition, structure and appropriate use of wound dressings.

Key content includes:

  • physiology of wound healing
  • advanced wound assessment
  • advanced wound dressing products
  • wound debridement
  • wound infection
  • complex wound types (leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, malignant/fungating tumours)
  • vascular assessment
  • compression bandaging
  • complex case studies.

Lower Limb Vascular Assessment and Compression Bandaging

Pre-requisites

Nil.

Course outline

Leg ulcers occur in approximately 1 - 2% of the over 60 years' population and prevalence increases with age. Assessment, clinical investigation and management of patients with leg ulcers should only be undertaken by health professionals trained in leg ulcer management.

In this workshop you will:

  • investigate the rationale for vascular assessment
  • review the principles of hand-held Doppler ankle brachial pressure index assessment
  • determine how to select equipment and prepare the patient
  • interpret results accurately
  • revise indications for re-examination
  • outline factors affecting the ABPI
  • measure and calculate ABPI correctly
  • develop your understanding of indications for measuring toe pressures on patients with calcification
  • record and interpret Doppler waveforms
  • review the current evidence informing vascular assessment principles
  • participate in an intensive practical session
  • undertake a skills assessment.

You will also learn the principles of compression therapy and participate in an intensive practical session, utilising various types of compression therapies, including compression bandaging.

Presenter

Michelle Gibb M Nsg Sci (NP), M Wound Care, BN. Michelle is a Nurse Practitioner in Wound Management and leads the Wound Healing Community Outreach Service at QUT. Michelle has more than ten years experience in wound management and has worked in the general practice, acute, community and aged-care residential environments.

Michelle is currently the Australian Wound Management Association Queensland State Representative, recipient of the Association of Queensland Nurse Leaders Emerging Leaders Award 2009 and was awarded the prestigious Bob and June Prickett Churchill Fellowship in 2010 to explore multidisciplinary wound healing services in the United Kingdom and Denmark. Michelle commenced her PhD in 2011.

When you register, we'll automatically email you an invoice. You can pay for your place in the course by credit card when you register, or by cheque, EFT/direct debit or credit card once you've received your invoice.

FEE-HELP and HECS-HELP are not available for Continuing Professional Education courses.

Cancellation

To cancel your registration, you must apply in writing to the Course Manager at the Office of Continuing Professional Education.

If you cancel at least 10 business days before the course commences, you will receive a full refund, minus a non-refundable $100 administration fee.

If you have not paid for your course, we will still invoice you for the $100 administration fee.

No registration refunds will be made within 10 business days of the course starting.

We reserve the right to cancel the course under certain circumstances, such as low registration numbers. If this happens, we will advise you as soon as possible, and give you a full refund. We are not responsible for any expenses you may have incurred if the course is cancelled.
