The aim of this unit is to develop the skills required to:

  • conduct a road safety audit
  • investigate crash sites
  • propose remedial treatments.

It also provides an opportunity for the course participants to apply these skills.

Road Safety Audit and Investigation and Treatment of Crash Locations are powerful tools for improving the safety of the road network in both proactive and reactive manners. It complements the more traditional reactive treatment approaches such as black spot programs. Although both Road Safety Audit and Treatment of Crash Locations have been used by Australian road authorities for a number of years, there is still a lack of suitably skilled people.

Consequently, the road authorities (through AUSTROADS) have developed national criteria for the Accreditation of Road Safety Auditors, which include completing an approved training course and obtaining relevant experience. Although there are no national criteria for the registration of crash investigators, the contents this course is based on the Austroads Guide to Road Safety, Part 6 - Road Safety Audit and Part 8 - Treatment of Crash Locations.

This course has been designed in conjunction with the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads to satisfy all the requirements for an approved road safety audit and treatment of crash locations course.
