This course has been developed for registered and enrolled nurses working in the specialty of gastroenterology.

The courses aim to provide the theoretical basis for gastroenterological nursing practice to registered or enrolled nurses employed in any location where gastrointestinal investigations or treatments are being performed.

This course will be conducted continually over two academic semesters. Who should participate

These modules assume a pre-existing level of knowledge. If you have have less than 12 months experience in this specialisation you may have not have sufficient background knowledge to complete the course.

The 2013 course commences Monday 4 March 2013. The course is offered annually and is conducted continually over two academic semesters.

Registrants may elect to register in a single module or for the complete course that comprises five modules. You are able to purchase individual modules up until Friday 30 August 2013 for completion by 25 October 2013.

Details: The modules consist of readings in CD format and some learning activities based on those readings. The learning activity will primarily be to read the material and then explore that topic through wider reading. There are other activities which will link the learning to your work situation. You'll answer the set questions after completing the learning activities.
Cost

Modules 1 to 5 (RN): $1,250 (including GST).
Individual module: $380 per module (including GST).

Modules 6 to 10 (EN): $1,250 (including GST).
Individual module: $380 per module (including GST).

You must pay by credit card when you register.

Credit eligibility

Eligible for credit/admission

For registered nurses, this course is approved for credit towards a 12 credit point elective unit in our:

  • Graduate Certificate in Nursing
  • Graduate Diploma in Nursing
  • Masters of Nursing.

For enrolled nurses, this course is not credited towards award courses in the QUT School of Nursing.

There are 5 modules in this course, ie: 5 modules for registered nurses and a similar 5 modules for enrolled nurses.

Each module focuses on a specific area of learning and the associated reading and extracts are essential for that module. You should also complete readings from additional sources.

Based on your individual learning needs, you can study as many modules as you wish.

Incorporated into the module are a series of workbook activities that you'll need to complete. These activities also constitute the mode of assessment.

This course is based in part on the curriculum of the Gastroenterological Nurses College of Australia. It provides the theoretical basis for gastroenterological nursing practice to the registered or enrolled nurse working with gastrointestinal investigations or treatments.

The course has 5 modules:

  • Modules 1 (RN) & 6 (EN): GIT Applied Anatomy & Physiology
  • Module 2 (RN) & 7 (EN): Upper GIT Disorders
  • Module 3 (RN) & 8 (EN): Liver & Pancreas Disorders
  • Module 4 (RN) & 9 (EN): Lower GIT Disorders
  • Module 5 (RN) & 10 (EN): Workplace Health & Safety in Gastroenterology
On completion of this course, you will be able to:
  • apply concepts and principles from the physiological and social sciences when caring for the patient undergoing gastrointestinal investigations or therapy
  • demonstrate knowledge and skill in the maintenance, preparation and use of endoscopic and other equipment
  • provide health teaching for patients and support persons which incorporates concepts of lifestyle adjustment and specific procedural implications
  • explain the relevant workplace health and safety requirements.

Who is the coordinator?

Di Jones has 36 years experience in gastroenterological nursing, and currently works in clinical, research and teaching positions in gastroenterology.

Di has had extensive involvement in the Gastroenterological Nurses College of Australia (GENCA) and is a lifetime member of that organisation. She contributed to the development of the GENCA Course Curriculum and participated in the development of the credentialling program for gastroenterology nurses. NOTE: if you are purchasing additional individual modules after 11 February 2013, you will need to pay online at the time of purchase. Please have your credit card ready.

FEE-HELP and HECS are not available for Continuing Professional Education courses.

Cancellation

To cancel your registration, you must apply in writing to the Course Manager at the Office of Continuing Professional Education.

If you withdraw prior to your course materials being posted, no cancellation fee will apply.

If you withdraw within 14 business days of your course materials being posted, you will receive a full refund, minus a non-refundable $100 administration fee. Note: you must return the course materials to QUT before the refund is processed.

No registration refunds will be made after 14 business days of your course materials being posted.

We reserve the right to cancel the course under certain circumstances, such as low registration numbers. If this happens, we will advise you as soon as possible, and give you a full refund. We are not responsible for any expenses you may have incurred if the course is cancelled.
