I chose to study medical physics at QUT because it allows me to follow my goal - to improve cancer treatments for the future. My research spans medicine, nanotechnology and physics, so I get to work with linear accelerators and other state-of-the-art technology on a daily basis. With the work placements and training I am receiving, I am in a continual learning environment where I can help solve problems that have a real clinical impact.Lucy Sim

What is a masters by research?
A masters by research is an opportunity to conduct a significant piece of supervised research.
At QUT, students normally:
- complete a relevant coursework component
- prepare a research hypothesis and methodology
- present the results of your research in a thesis.
What can I research?
Depending on the faculty you study in, you can either design your own topic for research, or choose from suggested student topics. If you are designing your own topic, we strongly suggest aligning the topic with one of our research areas.
Who should consider a masters by research?
A masters by research is ideal if you want to:
- develop high level skills in critical evaluation and research methodology
- acquire extensive knowledge in a specialist area
- expand your career possibilities
- prepare for entry into a PhD if your current academic experience doesn't meet the entry requirements.
To qualify for entry to a masters by research, you usually need to have:
- completed a bachelor degree, possibly with Honours
- completed a graduate diploma or masters by coursework degree
- or relevant professional experience.
How long will a masters by research take?
A masters by research usually takes:
