Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is a coursework award designed to meet the needs of students seeking a course that is specifically focused on teaching English as a foreign language. If you are seeking a formal qualification for English teaching in countries where English is not the dominant language, this course is ideal for you.
The course will extend your understanding of the theories and principles of second language acquisition/learning that inform your classroom practice as second language educators and build on your knowledge of effective pedagogy for teaching English as a foreign language in different cultural contexts. A range of optional units will provide practical teaching skills and strategies, provide opportunities to build theoretical knowledge and formulate a position in an area of applied linguistics that is relevant to your professional context, and explore the creative teaching potential of technologies and interactive multimedia tools.

This course will prepare you to teach English as a foreign language.
Units
In the TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) study area you are required to complete three (3) TEFL core units:
- CLN608 Second Language Acquisition;
- CLN621 Principles of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Methodology; and
- CLN622 Professional Practice in the EFL Context;
plus one (1) TESOL/TEFL option unit (a total of 48 credit points).
TEFL is available full time in semester one only.

Entry requirements
An appropriate 4 year Bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean
or
a 3 year Bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean PLUS at least one year of appropriate professional or industrial experience.
Students with at least one year of professional teaching experience should apply for the TESOL study area instead.

Students must meet the English proficiency requirements.
