Why choose this course?
Social workers are passionate about solving problems that result in human suffering and injustice. They are advocates for the disadvantaged and actively seek to support individuals, families and communities experiencing hardship and anguish. Our teaching staff of social workers, counsellors, political activists and advocates offer a supportive learning environment that is grounded in real-world practice. During this course, you will critically analyse human society and develop processes for helping people from a range of backgrounds. You will then apply this knowledge to your selected area of specialisation, and prepare for your professional career with extensive work placement.
Course summary
This course will prepare you to meet the challenges of life as a social worker. After foundation studies in human rights and ethics, contemporary social and community issues, advanced interpersonal communication, legal dimensions of social work, and social change and policy, you will complete specialist units in child and family services, corrective services, disability services, or services to young people.
You can also choose a study pathway that aligns with your career goals. The child protection pathway prepares you for practice in statutory child protection settings such as the Queensland Department of Child Safety. The international practice pathway allows you to study social work in an international context and complete professional placement overseas. The research pathway lets you apply your knowledge to research that improves social work practice and service.
You will gain extensive experience with 980 hours of professional practice. These placements are undertaken in a range of settings including public hospitals, youth agencies, the Child and Youth Mental Health Service, and the Department of Communities - Child Safety. Professional placements may be scheduled during the summer teaching period.
Career outcomes
Social workers have excellent employment opportunities in government, non-government and community organisations. Graduates are internationally recognised; they can apply for roles in clinical areas such as hospitals and mental health settings, and in non-clinical environments. They are highly-skilled for leadership and management roles and can have careers in child protection, youth services, corrective services, family support and counselling, Indigenous services, justice and legal services, community development, international aid, and social policy administration.
Professional recognition
Graduates are eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.
