Why choose this course?
Dietitians have advanced knowledge in the science of nutrition and are able to use this knowledge to advise on appropriate diet, food preparation and menu planning to treat nutrition-related disease. Accredited practising dietitians often work alongside health professionals in hospitals and community settings, contributing to the promotion of health, the prevention and treatment of illness, and optimal health maintenance. In the community, dietitians monitor, assess and improve the dietary patterns of groups or populations through education, training and promotion. With hands-on experience in the QUT Health Clinics and other community settings, this course prepares you for a range of professional roles.
Course summary
After foundation studies in chemistry, anatomy, food science, and the principles of food and nutrition, you will consolidate your learning with advanced units in biochemistry, physiology, public health nutrition, food service management and medical nutrition therapy.
You will be introduced to contemporary health services and public health issues and have an opportunity to research and critically analyse the future areas of dietetic practice, such as medical nutrition therapy, food service management, and community nutrition.
At the QUT Health Clinics you will provide, under the supervision of practising dietitians, specialised advice to clients with a range of dietary needs. You may also complete professional placements at community health centres, hospitals, aged care facilities, catering institutions and correctional facilities.
Career outcomes
Graduates can choose from a range of career pathways. They often provide medical nutrition therapy to clients in the management of disease and illness in hospitals, private practice, community health centres and nursing homes. Other employment opportunities include consulting to the food industry on product development and marketing; preparing educational material and resources for industry, schools and community; or developing food and nutrition policies for government and non-government organisations.
This course can also lead to further study or research in nutrition and dietetics, health service management, environmental health and public health.
Professional recognition
Graduates are eligible to apply for the Accredited Practising Dietitian credential plus membership of the Dietitians Association of Australia, the Public Health Association of Australia, Sports Medicine Australia, the Nutrition Society and other bodies.
