Real-world learning

You will develop your skills and confidence, learning in purpose-built, on-campus facilities that replicate the hospital environment, technology, and equipment. Realistic scenarios and practical learning approaches will prepare you to work in a range of nursing environments.

Our Clinical Simulation Centre contains operational hospital rooms where you will practise with real equipment and the latest technology in a simulated environment.

Your experience in real industry settings begins during second semester of your first year and continues with clinical placement experience every semester thereafter.

All students are scheduled for 840 hours of clinical practice with a minimum of 800 hours required for registration. You will receive extensive support that includes continual feedback on your performance from clinical facilitators, and mentoring relationships with registered nurses. You may also have the opportunity to apply to travel overseas and provide health services to communities in developed and developing countries.

What to expect

As a QUT nursing graduate you will be skilled in delivering safe and competent practice across diverse populations, responding to the challenges of health care with agility and resilience, and engaging consumers as informed partners in their health care.

Double degrees

Combine two bachelor degrees into a single course of study. A double degree allows you to specialise in two fields and pursue different interest areas, gaining a broader range of skills and knowledge, and giving you a competitive advantage and greater career flexibility.

Careers and outcomes

Nursing is one of the most diverse health professions and provides employment opportunities in Australia and overseas.

Employment can be in general and specialist areas such as emergency, paediatrics or mental health, and in areas of health care beyond the traditional hospital ward including community health, 'hospital in the home' care, school health, alcohol and drug dependence, and the armed services.

You could choose to complete further study and become specialist in acute care nursing, cancer nursing, emergency nursing, intensive care nursing, mental health nursing, or paediatric, child and youth health nursing.

Nurses are in demand all over the world and QUT nursing graduates have been successful in obtaining employment overseas, including in Britain, European Union, New Zealand and North America.

Professional recognition

NS42 Bachelor of Nursing is recognised by the Australian College of Nursing as satisfying the academic requirements for admission as a professional member. NS42 Bachelor of Nursing is currently an accredited Nursing Pre-registration course of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council / Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

NS42 Bachelor of Nursing is undergoing reaccreditation by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), with approval anticipated in late 2026.

Student registration

English language proficiency

QUT requires students to demonstrate that they can speak, write, read and comprehend academic English to a specified standard.

QUT's English proficiency requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS Academic / One Skill Retake: 7.0 or better overall with a writing sub-score of 6.5 or better and listening, reading and speaking sub-scores of 7.0 or better
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced: 185 or better overall with a writing subscore of 182 or better, a speaking sub-score of 194 or better, a listening subscore of 185 or better, and reading subscore of 193 or better
  • PTE Academic: 66 or better overall with a writing sub-score of 60 or better, a speaking sub-score of 76 or better, and listening and reading sub-scores of 66 or better
  • TOEFL iBT Australia Test (120 scale): 98 or better overall with no sub-score lower than 24
  • Occupational English Test (Nursing Profession): listening and writing sub-scores of 350 or better, and reading and speaking sub-scores of 360 or better.

The test must have been completed within 2 years prior to the proposed course start month.

Diploma of Nursing holders

If you have current AHPRA registration as an Enrolled Nurse (Division 2) (General) without restriction etc and you completed within 10 years prior to admission to the Bachelor of Nursing one of the following qualifications:

  • HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing
  • HLT54115 Diploma of Nursing
  • HLT51612 Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled - Division 2 nursing)

You should apply for the two-year program Bachelor of Nursing - Enrolled Nurse Entry (QTAC code 425241).

If you do not have current registration, current registration with restrictions etc, or your diploma was completed more than 10 years ago, you will need to undertake the full three-year program.

Degree holders

If you already hold a degree in any area other than nursing completed within the last ten years, you can apply for the Master of Nursing - Entry to Practice via QTAC and complete your nursing studies in two years.

QUT College Undergraduate Certificate (Nursing)

QUT College Undergraduate Certificate (Nursing) graduates will automatically receive an offer to start the Bachelor of Nursing within three weeks after completion of the undergraduate certificate. You will also automatically receive 0.5 year (48 credit points) credit transfer and be able to complete the degree in 2.5 years as a full-time student (or equivalent part-time).
