Details
The dance program at QUT leads the way in developing the creative passions of future dance professionals who aspire to careers outside of dance performance in fields such as dance teaching, choreography, research and academia, community arts practice, and arts management. Students are taught by an internationally recognised faculty of permanent staff and visiting specialists.
Why choose this course?
This course offers training in the core technique of contemporary dance and the experience of a broad range of other styles—ballet, funk, jazz, yoga, alternative styles and dance from a diverse range of global cultures. Alternative styles often include character dance, acrobatics/tumbling and robotics. Duo is learnt in and through this broad range of styles.
There are three main performance events across site-specific, digital and theatrical domains, engaging students with the public interface of their practice. Responding to influences of technology, choreographic workshops include a broad spectrum of screen studies, such as video clips through to dance films, and all students make and perform in this digital domain.
When not in the studio, you will engage with the theoretical knowledge. This involves analysing and reflecting on the body in dance and the roles of diverse styles of dance.
Additional studies can be selected from creative industries disciplines, some of which include creative writing, drama, entertainment, fashion, interior design studies, journalism, music studies, and visual arts practice.
If you wish to become a high school dance teacher, the ability to supplement your dance studies by selecting additional units allows you to develop skills for a second teaching area. Then, following completion of your course, you can apply to continue into a graduate-entry teacher education course.
Career outcomes
Our graduates move into careers as dance teachers in high school, private studios and other contexts; choreographers; dance researchers and academics; dance journalists; festival and community project directors and producers; independent dance practitioners; and arts administrators. This course can be followed with a graduate-entry teacher education course, which enables you to become a qualified teacher.
