Details

A process engineer develops and optimises industrial processes to make the huge range of products on which modern society depends. Process engineering involves refining, renewing or modifying raw materials (for example, plants such as sugar cane, ore-bearing rocks, waste, commodity chemicals or animals) to produce useful products and by-products for our society.  In today’s world, processing efficiently, sustainably and with a low energy footprint is key to business operations and profitability.  Industries that employ process engineers include chemicals manufacturing, gas production, minerals processing, food manufacturing and bio-process industries such as biofuels and waste products processing.

Process engineers are involved in designing equipment, controlling chemical reactions, developing process control strategies, and operating and upgrading industrial processes. Process engineers undertake these duties while ensuring protection of the environment and the health and safety of their employees and the community.

Explore your options

Your engineering degree features a common first year that combines broad foundation principles with a wide range of specialisation choices, giving you flexibility and options before you choose your career specialisation.

Why choose this specialisation?

By studying process engineering at QUT you will learn to apply practical analysis and technical principles to the areas across both science and engineering including mathematics, chemistry, energy systems, fluid mechanics, engineering materials, energy management and process management. Units will cover processing principles, unit operations, chemical reaction engineering and process design.

This degree will provide you with project management and leadership skills through coursework and projects necessary to approach complex and multidisciplinary problems in the workplace. Throughout the degree, emphasis will be placed on developing a responsible professional with a sense of social awareness.

You will benefit from QUT’s strong industry links and real-world lecturers and have access to opportunities for site visits, work integrated learning and research projects.

Career outcomes

Graduates of this degree have the opportunity to seek national and global careers in an office, in the outdoors or on an industrial plant, or a combination of all of these.  As a process engineer you have many career options including consulting, contracting, general management, investment analysts and advice, process planning and design, operations management, research, technical specialist, and in tertiary education.

Work is often process-orientated and you may be working on a number of projects, all at various different stages, at any given time.  Tasks that are typical for process engineers include interfacing with company representatives; developing project plans; negotiating additional resources; and communicating solutions to satisfy business units, company and external requirements.

You may gain employment across several industries including professional, scientific and technical services; environmental services; manufacturing; mining; and electricity, gas, water and waste services.
