Units
Your course
Year 1
You will develop discipline subject knowledge (content) related to your two teaching areas to prepare you for your field studies and curriculum studies units in the second year of your course. You will also be introduced to the world of teaching through two introductory education units.
Year 2
You will be immersed in how students develop and learn and introduced to the curriculum for your two teaching areas, as well as continuing your discipline subject knowledge. You will undertake your first four-week supervised field experience in a school.
Year 3
You will undertake your final discipline subject knowledge units and further develop your knowledge of curriculum and your ability to design teaching and learning experiences which you will be able to implement in your second four-week supervised school-based field experience.
Year 4
You will further hone your curriculum knowledge and teaching skills to be able to develop programs for a diverse range of students. You will undertake your final two supervised field experiences in a school setting comprising a total of eight weeks and a four-week internship.
Teaching areas
Successful applicants receive an offer in one of three streams: general, home economics or physical education. A good background in your selected teaching areas at Year 12 level (or equivalent) is strongly recommended particularly for language studies.
You will select your two teaching areas, one from group X and one from group Y.
A research option is available to high-achieving students.
Mathematics cannot be taken with Mathematics (Intermediate).
Science studies from group X cannot be taken with biology, chemistry, earth science or physics from group Y.
Physical Education (group X) and Health Education (group Y) is not a recommended teaching area combination. Physical Education students should select a second teaching area that will broaden their career opportunities.

Additional entry requirements
Literacy course requirements
All Bachelor of Education students are required to satisfactorily complete assessment criteria relating to Queensland College of Teachers' (QCT) literacy standards by the end of year three of their course in order to meet the course and QCT professional accreditation requirements.
Literacy modules have been developed as a remedial action for students who do not attain satisfactory standards on the relevant literacy criterion during their assessment in the first year of their studies. Students will have the support of the First Year Experience Coordinator. Students may attempt these modules any number of times during the first three years of their program.
At the end of year three, unsatisfactory results within course work and these modules may result in a recommendation for an early exit from the four-year degree. The literacy requirement will also apply to double degree students with a slight variation.
Working with Children Check: blue card
You'll need to apply for a blue card because you'll be working with children or young people as part of this course. There's no cost if you apply through QUT.
Submit your blue card application to the QUT Student Centre as early as possible - ideally, as soon as you've received your offer.
If you don't receive your blue card before the start of a unit that requires contact with children, you may be unable to participate and your grades may be affected. You may also still have to pay fees for the unit.
