Why choose this course?

The Bachelor of Education (Inservice) is an undergraduate course for teachers who wish to upgrade their qualifications, whether you are currently working as a teacher or wish to return to teaching after a break. It is a flexible course offering a wide range of professional development options and the opportunity to expand your current teaching portfolio.

The course aims to:

  • further develop your ability to critically evaluate current educational practice
  • introduce you to innovations in education
  • update your discipline knowledge
  • develop your commitment to teaching.

You will undertake a mature examination of yourself as a teacher and important educational issues in light of your preservice preparation and subsequent teaching experience.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Education (Inservice) is a fourth-year qualification for practising teachers with a two- to three-year qualification.

If applicants are not eligible for registration as a teacher with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) on entry to the course, it must be stressed that completion of the Bachelor of Education (Inservice) will not provide QCT eligibility.

Units

Course structure

You are required to complete eight units in one year full-time or two years part-time. The course provides flexibility for students to complete their studies across a range of areas.

Two core units must be completed , Engaging Diverse Learners and The Professional Practice of Educators, along with an additional two units from preservice courses within the Faculty of Education.

The remaining four units may be taken from a wide range of Faculty of Education preservice units or from other faculties.

Many students use their studies in the Bachelor of Education (Inservice) as an opportunity to gain expertise in specific areas. Students returning to the classroom after a break will often update their knowledge by undertaking preservice curriculum studies units in the early childhood, primary or specific secondary subject areas.

Alternatively you may choose a suite of units related to a specific area of interest such as culture and language studies or mathematics, science and technology education studies.
