Eligibility details

You must:

  • be applying for, or enrolled in your first teaching period of one of:
    • Graduate Certificate of Business (Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies) (BS39)
    • Master of Business (Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies) (BS16)
    • Master of Business (Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies) - Advanced (BS17).

You must also:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • be able to demonstrate financial need
  • have a work history in nonprofit organisation or career goals in this area.

What you receive

For the graduate certificate scholarship you'll receive:

  • $8000, paid in $1000 instalments upon successful completion of each 6-credit-point unit, for up to 2 years.

For the masters scholarship you'll receive:

  • $24 000 paid in $2000 instalments upon successful completion of each 12-credit-point unit, for up to 4 years.

A selection panel will review all applications. If you are shortlisted, we'll invite you to attend an interview.

We will call you if your application is successful.

We will email all applicants to advise the outcome of their application.

Conditions

You must:

  • remain enrolled in an Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies (ACPNS) graduate academic program at QUT for the full period of the award
  • promote the value of the scholarship program both within and outside the university
  • participate in a network of George Alexander Foundation scholars, with a focus on academic opportunities and community service, as appropriate
  • provide an annual written report to ACPNS outlining how you've performed during the year and how the scholarship has been spent
  • seek your own independent advice from the relevant authorities on the effect, if any, that the scholarship may have on eligibility for Austudy, Youth Allowance or any taxation implications.

You are required to notify ACPNS immediately if you:

  • transfer to another program within QUT
  • discontinue study
  • transfer to another institute.

You can hold this scholarship in addition to another QUT scholarship, but not another QUT Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies scholarship.

You can't transfer this scholarship to study at another institution.

Background

The George Alexander Foundation was established by George Alexander AM in 1972 to provide grants for public charitable purposes in Australia. Mr Alexander spent the later years of his life living in Queensland. He was passionate about supporting education, and promoting the role of philanthropy in education.

The George Alexander Foundation Scholarships Program was established in 2012 at QUT.
