Eligibility details
You must:
- have recently submitted your thesis for external examination
- be able to write full-time, or part-time if you can demonstrate that you're unable to write full-time
- have the approval of your supervisor, Head of School and Dean of your faculty.
You can't:
- hold another scholarship, except a top up scholarship
- be working full-time.
What you receive
You'll receive a living allowance while you're preparing and submitting refereed publications after lodging your thesis for external examination.
The allowance will be paid:
- for up to three months full-time or six months part-time
- at a level consistent with the current Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) rate.
Your scholarship will end two weeks after your thesis is submitted to the final collection, or at the end of the specified scholarship period, whichever comes first.
How to apply
Your faculty must complete and submit the nomination for postgraduate research student Write Up Scholarship form (PDF file, 64.94 KB).
Attach a project plan that outlines:
- the title of your article
- the publication you're targeting
- a timeline featuring milestones to be met in preparing the article.
If you're an international student, you must provide proof that you have an appropriate visa for the duration of the scholarship.
If you're studying part-time, you must provide proof of your exceptional circumstances.
What happens next
Faculties can submit nomination forms to the Research Degrees Committee throughout the year.
The Research Degrees Committee allocates scholarship funds each semester until all funds have been allocated.
If you're offered a scholarship you'll have seven days to accept it. Scholarships usually start within 14 days of the offer.
Progress report
You must submit a progress report no later than 6 weeks after your scholarship starts. The exact date will be on your offer letter.
The progress report confirms that you're progressing satisfactorily and are likely to complete your revisions and submit your thesis by the end of the scholarship.

To keep your scholarship, you must:
- start by the prescribed date
- submit a progress report no later than 6 weeks after your scholarship starts
- submit your article, with supervisor approval, for review by the relevant body for publication or presentation. If after submission your article is returned for further work or rejected, this will not affect your eligibility for the scholarship
- provide proof to the Research Degrees Committee and Research Students Centre that you've submitted your article for publication by the end of your scholarship
- meet with your principal supervisor once per week during the term of your scholarship
- comply with all relevant course requirements, regulations and rules (including disciplinary provisions).
You can:
- work up to 15 hours per week, not more than 8 hours during 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.
You can't:
- receive more than one Write Up Scholarship
- hold a Write Up Scholarship and another scholarship, other than a top-up scholarship
- be in full-time or substantial part-time employment
- take leave. However, emergency or exceptional circumstances may be considered.
Tax
The scholarship payment is tax exempt if you're committed full-time to writing your publication. The scholarship is taxable if you're writing part-time.
Part-time study
The scholarship is generally available to full-time students only. You may be able to receive the scholarship for part-time study under exceptional circumstances, including:
- caring responsibilities for a pre-school child
- caring responsibilities for school-aged children as a sole parent with limited access to outside support
- caring responsibilities for an invalid or disabled spouse, child or parent
- a medical condition that limits your capacity to study full-time.
You must provide documentary proof of your exceptional circumstances, such as a Statutory Declaration, Birth Certificate, or medical certificate.
Your Faculty must be satisfied that the exceptional circumstances make it unreasonable to expect you to study full-time.
You can't receive the scholarship for part-time study if you also work full-time.
International students can't usually receive this scholarship on a part-time basis, due to visa requirements.
Background
The Write Up Scholarship is designed to support students who are:
- writing up revision before submission of their final bound thesis
- writing up publications after lodgement of the thesis for external examination.
This scholarship is for research students writing up publications.
