Eligibility details
You must be:
- an Australian citizen or permanent visa holder, or New Zealand citizen
- of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
- living in Australia
You must be studying one of:
- Master of Education
- Graduate Diploma in Education
- Graduate Certificate in Education.
You can be studying full-time or part-time, internally or externally.
What you receive
You'll receive:
- your tuition fees or upfront Commonwealth supported place contribution (whichever is applicable) paid by the scholarship for one year if you're a full-time student, or two years if you're a part-time student
- a $600 book voucher to buy textbooks at QUT bookshops.
How to apply
- Complete the Penny Tripcony scholarship and application form (PDF file, 429.23 KB), including:
- Confirmation of your aboriginality (eg. A letter from the Oodgeroo Unit or similar documentation)
- A copy of the transcript of your results from High School and any Tertiary study that you have attempted or completed.
- Complete a one-page statement addressing:
- why you are seeking this scholarship
- if you were successful in being the recipient, how it will help with achieving your education/career goals
- the reasons for your choice of degree.
- Submit your application by mail or in person to the Faculty of Education Student Affairs Office.
What happens next
A selection panel will assess applications. The panel will comprise:
- a representative from the Oodgeroo Unit
- The Chair of the Faculty of Education Equity Committee or delegate
- a Program Coordinator from either ED79, ED61, or ED38 or delegate
- a Faculty of Education Student Affairs representative.
We'll notify you of the outcome of your application.
Conditions
The scholarship is awarded to students who are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and demonstrate a strong desire to complete their course within the Faculty of Education. The scholarship is only available to domestic students currently living in Australia. International students are not eligible to apply.
The scholarship is tenable for:
- one year for full-time students
- two years or equivalent for part-time students.
The value of the scholarship is your fees for the equivalent of one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study, and will provide these benefits:
- fees equalling 96 credit points for masters and graduate diploma students, or 48 credit points for graduate certificate students
- $600 book voucher redeemable from any QUT bookshop for the purchase of textbooks.
To keep your scholarship, you must:
- formally accept the offer of a scholarship within 14 days of the offer being made
- start your studies in the first semester of the year in which you receive the scholarship
- enrol in at least 2 units per semester
- make reasonable progress in your course. If you receive a failing grade (K-3) for more than one unit, we will immediately rescind your scholarship.
If you withdraw from a unit after the official dates for withdrawal without financial penalty, you may incur fees. You may apply directly to the QUT Fees Office to have your fees waived if you withdraw due to extreme circumstances. The stipulation regarding payment of fees incurred will be a condition upon accepting the offer of a scholarship.
You must not:
- take more than 12 months approved leave of absence
- take leave of absence in your first semester, as per QUT policy
You may be invited to participate in:
- publicity to promote the scholarship and the participation of Indigenous students in the Faculty of Education
- the interview panel to choose future scholarship recipients.
You don't have to agree to participate in these activities.
This scholarship has been deemed tax exempt by QUT, but the Australian Taxation Office will make the ultimate determination. We strongly encourage you to make your own inquiries about the effect of such a scholarship on your taxation or any government benefits to which you are currently entitled.
We award one scholarship each year.
Background
The Penny Tripcony Scholarship encourages students from an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background to realise their study goals and undertake a Master of Education, Graduate Diploma in Education or Graduate Certificate in Education course within the Faculty of Education at the Queensland University of Technology.
