• studying full-time
• starting or completing your final year in any Bachelor of Nursing course in Semester 2, 2013.

You can be studying any single nursing bachelor degree or a double degree that includes nursing.

You'll receive:

1. The purpose of this Award is to help support a full-time student who will be: completing their final year in any Bachelor of Nursing course in Semester 2, 2013 at QUT; or will be commencing their final year in any Bachelor of Nursing course in Semester 2, 2013 at QUT.
2. The Award is tenable for 12 months and is subject to the recipient remaining enrolled full-time in the degree. The recipient will also need to maintin an appropriate grade point average (GPA) in any required coursework, with minimum pass grades to successfully complete the degree.

4. The Award is provided principally for educational purposes and the value of the award for 2013 is $3000.
5. A copy of the conditions of this Award and a copy of the tax information document (to be prepared by QUT Development) will be supplied to the student. The Award recipients will require this information when completing a tax return.
6. Paid employment of any nature, with any employer, undertaken by the recipient must not interfere with the student's study program. The university reserves the right to terminate the award if progress - as a result of additional paid work being undertaken - is not satisfactory.
7. The recipient will be required to write to the Head, School of Nursing, QUT, at the completion of each semester outlining his/her academic progress.
8. The recipient will be required to address the potential applicants for the award in the year following his/her receipt of the award.
9. QUT shall not require the recipient to render any service to the university, either during the tenure of the award or upon its completion, as a condition of the Award.
10. This scholarship has been deemed tax exempt by QUT, but ultimate determination will be made by the Australian Taxation Office. Please retain this statement with your tax documentation.
11. Questions regarding the tax position of the scholarship should be directed initially to the School of Nursing.

Dr Joan Penridge was a founding member of QUT's School of Nursing when it was established at the former QIT in 1978. Her outstanding commitment as a staff member in the school and the university continued until her untimely death from cancer in 1994. Throughout her academic career, Joan made an enormous contribution to the development of nursing education in Queensland, particularly the transition of undergraduate nursing to the higher education sector.

Joan believed passionately in the importance of education for nurses. Both inside and outside the university her work was strongly underpinned by her unwavering vision of nursing as both an academic and a practice discipline. For her, the importance of theory and practice working synergistically together could not be underestimated and she worked tirelessly toward the goal of producing theoretically sound and clinically competent nurses. Joan inspired all those who had the good fortune to work with her, and her persistence, tenacity and commitment to the achievement of her vision have left an enduring legacy which continues today.

As part of the School of Nursing's 20 years celebrations in 1998, it was decided to raise funds to establish an endowment fund to be used to support a scholarship to honour Dr Joan Penridge and to help prospective nursing students. Interest earned from the fund is used to finance the Joan Penridge Commemorative Award each year.
