Eligibility details

You must:

  • have completed Year 12 in the year you apply for the program, or the previous year
  • have received an OP 1 (or equivalent) with Bonus Ranks
  • be starting university for the first time
  • be able to demonstrate your leadership experience and potential
  • apply for and gain a place in the Bachelor of Engineering - Dean's Scholars Program.

If you're studying at QUT International College (QUTIC) you must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 6.5 for the two semesters immediately before you apply for the Dean's Scholars Program.

If you studied Engineering Technology at school, you'll have bonus points applied to your OP or rank through our Entry bonus scheme, which might help you get into the Dean's Scholars Program even if your original rank doesn't meet the cut-off.

Students anticipating an OP of 1-3 should apply for consideration.

What you receive

The scholarship will pay either:

  • all of your HECS-HELP fees, if you're a domestic student
  • approximately one third of your tuition fees, if you're an international student.

You'll also:

  • be invited to company site visits with major industry players, which give you the opportunity to experience engineering environments and high-level engineering management
  • an annual leadership dinner
  • industry and professional association networking events
  • have access to leadership and professional development opportunities
  • be able to register for senior academic, peer and industry professional mentoring
  • complete at least 60 days of work experience, including work integrated learning
  • have membership to the Built Environment and Engineering Dean's Scholars (BEEDS) Alumni Group and access to networking and professional development opportunities before and after you graduate.

Dean's Scholars are encouraged to undertake an exchange program from the third year of study as part of their scholarship experience.

How to apply

  1. Apply for the Bachelor of Engineering (Dean's Scholars Program) through QTAC.

    Make sure you use the correct QTAC code (412052) for the Dean's Scholars Program version of your course.

  2. Complete and submit the Dean's Scholars Program questionnaire for new applicants or the questionnaire for revisiting applicants.

    You'll need to register and create a username and password. You'll be able to save your questionnaire and come back to it if you need to.

Demonstrating your leadership potential on your application

Entry to the Dean's Scholars Program is highly competitive. We select Dean's Scholars for their leadership potential as well as academic abilities, so it's important to build a positive profile of your abilities on the questionnaire. You can do this by including things like:

  • club and community work
  • participation in extracurricular activities (academic and non-academic)
  • teamwork activities, such as sport and music

Supporting documents

If you need to submit supporting documents electronically, please do so using the supporting documentation cover sheet (DOCX file, 41.12 KB).

If you're submitting hard copy documents, they must be:

  • photocopies, not originals and not on CD
  • secured with a single staple, foldback clip or paperclip in the top left-hand corner, with the cover sheet as the front page.
  • don't bind your documents or submit them in a presentation folder.

What happens next

We'll shortlist applications prior to the finalisation of OP scores. Check the QTAC site to find out whether you have been successful in the shortlisting. Offers will be made once OP scores are released.

Conditions

To keep your scholarship, you must:

  • maintain enrolment full-time in the Bachelor of Engineering undergraduate course
  • graduate from the Bachelor of Engineering within 4 years of starting, except where you've taken a leave of absence approved by the Assistant Dean or there are other extenuating circumstances
  • maintain a grade point average (GPA) of at least 6.0 each semester
  • complete 60 days of work experience, including work integrated learning
  • pay any costs associated with your program that aren't covered by the scholarship, including additional and repeated units.

You'll be invited to and expected to participate in other program activities, such as site visits, events, professional development and mentoring. It's your responsibility to participate in these activities to get the most out of your scholarship.

If you'd like to participate in an exchange program you must:

  • talk to your course coordinator before applying for the exchange. We recommend exploring exchange opportunities during your second year to provide adequate preparation time
  • make sure that the units you study on exchange will be credited towards your QUT course
  • formally apply, via the Dean's Scholars Program Coordinator, to the Assistant Dean, as well as the QUT Outbound Student Exchange

You can:

  • apply to change your course structure under exceptional circumstances. You must apply through your academic mentor or course coordinator, and receive prior written approval from the Assistance Dean External Relations.
  • apply for other scholarships and bursaries, including ones associated with travel, as long as you're allowed to under the conditions of the other scholarship and under QUT policy.
