Details
This study area is designed to meet the needs of beginning and experienced teachers as well as other educators who have a strong interest in the literacy development of their students and clients.
You will study four core units which will engage you with current and historical issues and debates, as well as specific, more specialised areas of interest within the broad domain of literacy. You will examine current issues such as strong moves world-wide to standardise literacy curriculum and assessment and how you can productively and ethically address linguistic and social diversity in your context.
Career outcomes
Master of Education (Studies in Literacy) will increase your expertise in current issues in literacy education that will prepare you to meet the changing demands of government policy and social diversity in the contemporary workplace. Graduates have found that studying in this area brings the satisfaction that comes with ongoing professional development and the confidence and expertise that helps them to take on leadership and coaching roles in literacy education and/or to pursue further postgraduate study.
Recommended course combinations
Literacy units can be chosen as electives in conjunction with core units in Early Childhood, Leadership and Management, and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL).

In the Studies in Literacy study area you are required to complete the two (2) MEd core units:
- EDN610 Professional Dialogues in Education
- EDN611 Professional Applications of Research
plus the four (4) Studies in Literacy study area core units
- CLN652 Literacies for English Language Learners
- CLN654 Functional Grammar for Reading and Writing
- CLN660 Literacy Development and Performance
- SPN647 Understanding Reading and Writing Difficulties
as well as two (2) option units. (a total of 96 credit points).

Entry requirements
An appropriate four (4) year Bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean or a three (3) year Bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean PLUS at least one year of appropriate professional or industrial experience. (Applicants who have completed a three (3) year Bachelor degree or equivalent are asked to supply an original copy of a letter from their employer outlining details of their employment history)
