Details

Master of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) provides advanced-level studies for registered teachers. This dedicated study area allows teachers to upgrade their qualifications with a focus on early childhood teaching, and includes a field experience component (practicum).

The course will enable you to develop in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge and understandings of current research, theory and practice that will inform effective teaching and learning with young children and their families in early years programs and services.

Practicum

Master of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) includes a 20-day (four weeks) field experience with children in an early childhood setting. You may choose between the Field Studies in Early Childhood or Field Studies in Early Childhood: Birth to 5 Years practicum units. These units will enable you to draw upon your professional knowledge and experience in planning, implementing and evaluating learning experiences for and with young children, their families and communities.

Career outcomes

This study area will prepare qualified teachers to become early childhood specialists, both in schools and as leaders in childcare and other prior-to-school settings.

Professional recognition

Master of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) is recognised as a specialist early childhood qualification with Queensland Department of Communities and the Crèche and Kindergarten Association (C&K). Please note that additional requirements may be needed for employment interstate or overseas.

Units

In the Early Childhood Teaching study area you are required to complete the two (2) MEd core units:

  • EDN610 Professional Dialogues in Education
  • EDN611 Professional Applications of Research

plus the six (6) Early Childhood Teaching core units:

  • EAN601 Investigating Curriculum and Pedagogy in Early Childhood
  • EAN603 Child Development in Context
  • EAN614 Arts and Sciences in Early Childhood
  • EAN615 Mathematics in Early Childhood
  • EAN616 Language, Literacies and Communication in Early Childhood
  • plus a choice of either EDN635 Field Studies in Early Childhood or EDN641 Field Studies in Early Childhood: Birth to 5 Years.

Entry requirements

An appropriate four (4) year Bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean or a three (3) year Bachelor degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean PLUS at least one year of appropriate professional or industrial experience.  (Applicants who have completed a three (3) year Bachelor degree or equivalent are asked to supply an original copy of a letter from their employer outlining details of their employment history)

Students undertaking the Early Childhood Teaching study area must be registered teachers or eligible for registration. (Applicants are asked to supply original evidence of their current teacher registration with their application if possible)

Course fees

Your actual fees may vary depending on which units you choose. All fees are based on current fixed fee prices. We review fees annually.

2013: CSP $3,000 (indicative) per Semester (48 credit points) (subject to annual review)
