Details

Master of Education (Career Development) is designed for graduates who are interested in learning about career development and career counselling. Recent developments in public policy nationally and internationally have added to the dynamic status of the field of career development. This study area consists of extensive theoretical, practice, policy and research literature. Discipline units provide an in-depth background to all aspects of career development, introduce students to basic counselling techniques, and give students experience in the application of traditional and emerging career counselling processes. You will develop advanced skills in communication and counselling.

Assessment Items

The assessment items in the Career Development study area are designed to provide you with opportunities to connect with the literature in the field, reflect on your strengths, and to provide practical and useful outcomes.  They include review of literature, development of a careers program, a log/workbook and sample counselling interviews.  All of the work in the Career Development units is offered online and only the Introductory Counselling unit is offered face to face.

Recommended course combinations

Many participants complete a double major in Career Development and School Guidance and Counselling so that they have a broad platform for employability. This combination can be advantageous as in many schools the same staff member covers both fields.  Combining the Career Development study area with some Leadership and Management units is popular choice for students who wish establish solid foundations for future promotion. Other areas such as Business Management are advantageous for participants who are looking to establish their own professional practice.

Career outcomes

The field of career development has undergone significant change with the attendant demand for accountability and accreditation. Successful completion of this study area will enable you to work as a career counsellor, career teacher or career coach. Some participants have chosen to combine the study areas of Career Development and School Guidance and Counselling to provide a broader platform of employability. This combination of study areas complements practitioners in the field and enables them to service a greater cross-section of students within schools and clients in the private sector (see School Guidance and Counselling - Option B).
