Overview

• For domestic students, this course draws on expertise from a number of health disciplines and meets the needs of Nurses who want to gain specific skills for more advanced practice opportunities.
• For domestic and international Allied Health workers, this course provides introductory advanced level study for the many professional groups working with patients who have a range of chronic health conditions.
• For domestic and international Public Health professionals, this course provides a focus on the prevention and promotion of health in order to prevent or delay the onset of chronic health conditions.
• All students undertake the core unit Chronic Conditions Prevention and Management, followed by three units from their chosen specialisation: Nursing, Allied Health or Public Health.
• Available on campus or online, this course is available for entry in February and July, over 1 semester (full-time) or 2 semesters (part-time), except for the Nursing study area, which is available by part-time study only.

QUT’s Faculty of Health is introducing a new Graduate Certificate in Chronic Health Conditions in recognition of the growing need for health professionals to be able to practise in and lead interdisciplinary health care teams working in the area of chronic disease, chronic illness and/or disability.

International students please note: the Nursing study area is currently only available to domestic students. See 'International applicants' section below for more details.

The course draws on expertise from a number of health disciplines in the faculty and is suited to a range of health practitioners working in diverse settings. It meets the needs of Nurses wanting to gain specific skills for more advanced practice opportunities. For Allied Health workers, this course provides introductory advanced level study for the many professional groups working with patients who have a range of chronic health conditions. For Public Health professionals, it enables further study to provide a focus on the prevention and promotion of health in order to prevent or delay the onset of chronic health conditions.

Its aim is to produce graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary for professional, highly skilled work and/or further learning in the area of chronic health conditions.

Three study areas will be offered: Nursing, Allied Health and Public Health.

Chronic conditions is an overarching term used to encompass chronic disease, chronic illness and disability. While cardiovascular disease and diabetes are major contributors to chronic conditions, there are many other physical, mental and developmental conditions that impact on a person’s health. Chronic conditions are those involving a long course in their development or their symptoms, and these conditions account for a high proportion of illness, disability, hospitalisation, and deaths globally (World Health Organisation, 2009).

Course structure

The Graduate Certificate in Chronic Health Conditions is offered with three study areas: Nursing, Allied Health and Public Health and will appeal to health professionals working in a range of diverse settings.

All students will undertake the core unit Chronic Conditions Prevention and Management, providing the foundation for the course.

Students undertaking the Nursing study area will complete studies in advanced health assessment, chronic care nursing and practice, whilst students undertaking the Allied Health or Public Health study areas will be able to select from a range of electives suited to their professional expertise, which may encompass studies in nutrition and dietetics, health promotion, promoting healthy ageing, epidemiology and research designs.

International applicants

Please note: the Nursing study area in this course is only available to international students on a non-student visa that includes study rights in Australia. Applicants will need to be registered or authorised to practise in their country of origin or residence OR have current registration with the NMBA. Entry requirements

Applicants for the Graduate Certificate in Chronic Health Conditions must have a bachelor degree in a health discipline (or equivalent).

Additional requirements

Nursing study area

• Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia

Allied Health study areas

• Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); or
• Recognised professional credentialing with the required professional body; or
• in the case of international applicants, with a health regulatory authority in the student’s country of origin or residence.
