Why choose this course?
Public health professionals are skilled in developing and delivering health initiatives that focus on improving the health and wellbeing of whole populations. They often specialise in a specific area of health and, during this course, you will be able to select a study pathway that aligns with your career goals. You will also complete work placements that expose you to an array of career options, and allow you to develop valuable industry contacts.
Course summary
This course allows you to study a variety of areas essential for practice including sociology, epidemiology, communication, statistics and evaluation, nutrition, health system management and finance.
During second and third years, you will apply this knowledge to your elected area of interest. You can select from alcohol and drug studies, community nutrition, general studies in psychology, health education, Indigenous health, women’s health or science.
You can also tailor the course to prepare for further study and a career as a registered environmental health officer or occupational health and safety officer.
Career outcomes
Many graduates work in local, state or national health departments. Their role may focus on health education and promotion, policy development, cancer prevention, epidemiology, risk management and disease prevention.
Graduates may also work in non-government and community organisations in roles that focus on advocacy for minority groups, or as consultants and project officers in international health agencies.
By completing further study, you may also pursue a career as a specialist in environmental health, occupational health and safety, or health management.
Professional recognition
Graduates are eligible for membership of the Public Health Association of Australia and the Australian Health Promotion Association.

Assumed knowledge
Before you start this course we assume you have sound knowledge in these areas:

We assume that you have knowledge equivalent to four semesters at high school level (Years 11 and 12) with sound achievement (4, SA).

Off-campus placements
Students will be required to undertake placements off campus and will need to cover travel and accommodation costs.
Deferment
You can defer your offer and postpone the start of your course for one year.
