Why choose this course?

This degree is ideal if you want a career that promotes physical activity, health and wellbeing. While completing this course, you have the opportunity to specialise in an area of sports science that aligns with your career goals. You will then put this knowledge into practice by completing extensive work experience in your final year. Graduates of this program are well prepared for a career in fitness, strength and conditioning, performance analysis, corporate health, or exercise and movement science research.

Public health professionals are skilled in developing and delivering health initiatives that focus on improving the health and wellbeing of whole populations. They often specialise in a specific area of health and, during this course, you will be able to select a study pathway that aligns with your career goals. You will also complete a work placement that will expose you to public health in practice and provide you with valuable industry contacts.

Career outcomes

Graduates can pursue a career in a range of health industries. Employment opportunities may include providing sport and recreation services in the tourism and hospitality sector, fitness programmer or personal trainer in the fitness industry, assisting elite sporting agencies with athlete strength conditioning and performance analysis, consultant to corporations in the development of a tailored health and wellness package for employees, clinical investigations (cardiac science, pulmonary science, sleep disorders, clinical neuro physiology) or building a research career in exercise and movement science to help communities and athletes.

Exercise and sports science specialists work across the community ranging from children to the elderly, including a focus on people with disabilities and elite athletes.

To help you with decisions about electives, practicum placements and how to position yourself for a career in the exercise and sports science field, consider these four broad professional areas that many of our students follow:

  • Health and wellness - includes the fitness industry (gyms, corporate wellness and fitness programs), worksite health promotion and community physical activity programs.
  • Sports performance - focused on the provision of specialised sports training and assessment for schools, professional teams, community sports clubs and disabled athletes.
  • Exercise rehabilitation - focused on individuals with disease or injury and involves clinically relevant functional testing and the prescription of appropriate exercise or retraining.
  • Research - not only includes university positions but also industry and government positions after the completion of further study.

The field of exercise and sports science provides a holistic approach to achieving and maintaining health and fitness and to helping people feel good about themselves.

Many public health graduates work in local, state or national health departments. Their role may focus on health education and promotion, policy development, cancer prevention, epidemiology, risk management, sexual and reproductive health, disease prevention and research and evaluation.

Graduates may also work in non-government and community organisations in roles that focus on advocacy for minority groups, or as consultants and project officers in international health agencies.

Graduate public health roles include: health promotion officers, school health educators, assistant epidemiologists, researchers, state and national health program managers and health policy officers.

Professional recognition

Graduates are eligible for membership of Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) as an accredited exercise scientist. ESSA is a professional organisation committed to tertiary trained exercise and sports science practitioners and accredits QUT's graduates as exercise scientists.

Graduates are also eligible for membership with the Public Health Association of Australia and the Australian Health Promotion Association.
