Why choose this course?
A degree in Exercise and Movement Science is ideal if you want a career that promotes physical activity, health and wellbeing. While completing this course, you have the opportunity to specialise in an area of sports science that aligns with your career goals. You will then put this knowledge into practice by completing extensive work experience in your final year. Graduates of this program are well prepared for a career in fitness, strength and conditioning, performance analysis, corporate health, or exercise and movement science research.
Dietitians have advanced knowledge in the science of nutrition and are able to use this knowledge to advise on appropriate diet, food preparation and menu planning to treat nutrition-related disease. Accredited practising dietitians often work alongside health professionals in hospitals and community settings, contributing to the promotion of health, the prevention and treatment of illness, and optimal health maintenance. In the community, dietitians monitor, assess and improve the dietary patterns of groups or populations through education, training and promotion. With hands-on experience in the QUT Health Clinics and other community settings, this course prepares you for a range of professional roles.
Career outcomes
At present the demand for sports nutritionists is increasing and there is a growing field in the area of rehabilitation science for people with dual qualifications. This degree will prepare you for a career in a number of settings including rehabilitation and hospital clinics, family and community services, corporate health and fitness, government agencies, universities and colleges, institutes of sport, and the health and wellness industry.
Exercise and Movement Science graduates can pursue a career in a range of health industries. Employment opportunities may include providing sport and recreation services in the tourism and hospitality sector, fitness programmer or personal trainer in the fitness industry, assisting elite sporting agencies with athlete strength conditioning and performance analysis, consultant to corporations in the development of a tailored health and wellness package for employees, clinical investigations (cardiac science, pulmonary science, sleep disorders, clinical neuro physiology) or building a research career in exercise and movement science to help communities and athletes.
Exercise and sports science specialists work across the community ranging from children to the elderly, including a focus on people with disabilities and elite athletes.
To help you with decisions about electives, practicum placements and how to position yourself for a career in the exercise and sports science field, consider these four broad professional areas that many of our students follow:
- Health and wellness - includes the fitness industry (gyms, corporate wellness and fitness programs), worksite health promotion and community physical activity programs.
- Sports performance - focused on the provision of specialised sports training and assessment for schools, professional teams, community sports clubs and disabled athletes.
- Exercise rehabilitation - focused on individuals with disease or injury and involves clinically relevant functional testing and the prescription of appropriate exercise or retraining.
- Research - not only includes university positions but also industry and government positions after the completion of further study.
The field of exercise and sports science provides a holistic approach to achieving and maintaining health and fitness and to helping people feel good about themselves.
Combined with the Nutrition and Dietetics degree, you can choose from an even wider range of career pathways. Nutrition and Dietetics graduates often provide medical nutrition therapy to clients in the management of disease and illness in hospitals, private practice, community health centres and nursing homes. Other employment opportunities include consulting to the food industry on product development and marketing; preparing educational material and resources for industry, schools and community; or developing food and nutrition policies for government and non-government organisations.
Professional recognition
Graduates are eligible for membership of Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) as an accredited exercise scientist. ESSA is a professional organisation committed to tertiary trained exercise and sports science practitioners and accredits QUT's graduates as exercise scientists.
