'A siren, voice recorder, and robot might be simple enough to analyse, but designing them is a whole different challenge altogether - it really makes you think like a problem-solving inventor. I'm involved with the Big Sister, Little Sister program, which was developed for female engineering students as a peer mentoring/support network as part of the Girls in Engineering Making Statements club.'

On commencing her Civil and Environmental Engineering degree, Kate Francis received the Women in Engineering scholarship for displaying strong leadership in her Year 12 studies, her community work, charity fundraising, sports and mentoring of Year 8 students.

'What I enjoy most about my job is the real impact I know our products have on saving or prolonging someone's life. Medical engineering at QUT allowed me to combine my interest in medicine with engineering and science, with real-world projects that showed me what I could expect after graduation. First-hand exposure to hospitals and industry not only prepared me for my career, but opened my eyes to the options available.'

'I chose to study power engineering so I could help find ways to use renewable energies more, and make energy a cleaner and more affordable resource.I aim to design and develop a cost-effective, smaller and lighter inverter, which will control voltage rather than current, to support renewable energy use in the grid, manage peak demand, and assist power storage.'

'I have always aspired to a career in the automotive industry and because QUT had a successful Motorsport team I elected to study mechanical engineering at QUT. I really enjoy the mechanical design units, one of which includes designing a gearbox, and am looking forward to motor vehicle racing design this semester.'
