Organisations exist for us to use them. There is a lot of support and advice available out there – so make the most of them. If you are unsure about something – find out. It's only a web search or phone call away.
These are some services out there and their general purpose.
- Residential Tenancies Authority- Tel: 1300 366 311. Assists tenants, lessors, agents, residents and service providers in the following key ways:
- Rental bond custodial service: The RTA holds and refunds rental bond money that is paid by tenants to lessors/agents;
- Tenancy information and education: The RTA offers free information to all tenants, lessors, agents, residents and service providers in Queensland;
- Dispute Resolution Service: The RTA's Dispute Resolution Service offers information about tenancy law, a telephone shuttle negotiation service, and conciliation conferences;
- Investigations Unit: The RTA will investigate and prosecute offences under the legislation when appropriate.
- Tenants’ Union of Queensland - is a state-wide, community based, tenancy advice and advocacy organisation for tenants, providing a range of tenancy information and advocacy services. They are unable to deal with share house disputes due to conflict of interest (different clients could be tenants within the same share house and they are unable to advise one against the other in matters of conflict). Tel: (07) 3257 1108.
- New Farm Neighbourhood Centre Tenants Advice and Advocacy Service - provides free advice, advocacy and housing referral services for tenants and residents. They are unable to deal with share house conflict due to conflict of interest (different clients could be tenants within the same share house and they are unable to advise one against the other in matters of conflict). Many students access this service. Tel: (07) 3358 3951.
- West End Community House Tenant Advice and Advocacy Service provides free advice, advocacy and housing referral services to tenants. They are unable to deal with share house conflict due to conflict of interest (different clients could be tenants within the same share house and they are unable to advise one against the other in matters of conflict). Many students access this service. Tel: (07) 3844 3914.
- Your local Tenant Advice and Advocacy Service - check to see if there is a service in your local area – see T in the telephone book or follow the link.
- Caxton Legal Centre - is an independent, non-profit community organisation providing free legal and social work advice, assistance and referral for the general public. They don’t deal with share house conflict; service is primarily to provide legal advice on a range of issues, including tenancy issues. Many students access this service. Tel: (07) 3254 1811.
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women’s Legal and Advocacy Service - is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisation that provides legal information, advice and referrals. Services are available by appointment (telephone or face-to-face). Tel: (07) 3392 3177
- Women's Legal Service (QLD) - is a state-wide service run by women for women, legal advice and referral. Tel: (07) 3392 0670.
