Events and workshops for widening participation partner schools
We offer a variety of school programs both on-campus and off-campus to support under-represented groups, with a particular emphasis on low income, rural and Indigenous students.
Since 2010 we've worked with schools in Caboolture and Brisbane's north to build aspiration for tertiary study in science, technology, engineering and maths. Through our interactive, engaging programs we aim to demystify university for students, particularly those who would be the first in their family to attend.
Support is available to assist schools to take advantage of our programs.
Extreme Science and Engineering Van workshops
Our vans travel to South-East Queensland primary and secondary schools to provide in-class, hands-on workshops in science, technology, engineering and maths. The vans are a free service to selected schools to enhance education in these areas.
STEM Futures
The STEM Futures program brings current students from QUT to your school to share their university experiences. Our students talk about their current field of study, and share some hands-on activities with your students.
Available in terms 2 and 3, this in-school program for years 8-12 is designed to promote the study of maths, IT and science in secondary schools, and to promote further studies and careers in STEM fields.
Programs are offered as in-class presentations, as lunchtime Q&A sessions or as peer to peer mentoring sessions. This program is tailored to meet the needs of individual schools and year levels.
For more information on this program please contact our Science and Engineering Widening Participation team.
Explore Uni days
Each year, we have opportunities for Year 6-12 students to visit a QUT campus to learn more about university life and explore uni for themselves. These days include hands-on science and engineering activities.
Activities in this program are either free or heavily subsidised and are only available to selected schools in north Brisbane and Sunshine Coast south areas. Contact the Explore Uni program for more information.
Power of Engineering events
In collaboration with AECOM and Engineers Australia, QUT's vision is to inspire young people, particularly females, to:
- consider a diverse and creative career in engineering
- squash the perception that a career in engineering is all hard hats and maths
- to prove that engineers have the power to shape the future.
This free one-day event for year 9 and 10 students features three practical workshops in our world-class engineering labs, guest speakers and a site visit to see engineering in action.
We run this event in Terms 1, 2 and 3.
Science teacher resources
These past workshop notes are intended to provide a useful resource for primary and secondary teachers in science. Please contact us to let us know how your student enjoy the activities provided.
