Science and engineering for schools

To engage and enthuse year 8-12 students in science, technology, engineering and maths disciplines, we offer a variety of on-campus activities tailored to suit your school's needs and interests, including tours, seminars and hands-on workshops for students. We also offer professional development courses for teachers.

Our Science and Engineering vans travel off-campus to deliver hands-on workshops to primary and secondary schools in South-East Queensland regional areas.

STEM education at the Science and Engineering Centre

Our Science and Engineering Centre's wide variety of National-Curriculum related STEM workshops will engage your students in creative, critical thinking and inspire them through real-world experiences.

From digital learning environments and open-source technologies, through to robotics and urban planning, mathematics and astrophysics, transform the way your students interact with STEM.

Vice-Chancellor's STEM Regional Camp

Although this camp is targeted at regional students, we will offer day passes to local students to attend the first STEM Regional Camp. Students will participate in intensive programs in science, technology, engineering or maths over four days.

The camp will run during the mid semester holidays in 2013, June 25 - 28. Applications open 28 March 2013.

Power of Engineering events

In collaboration with AECOM and Engineers Australia, QUT’s vision is to inspire young people, particularly females, to:

  • consider a diverse and creative career in engineering
  • squash the perception that a career in engineering is all hard hats and maths
  • to prove that engineers have the power to shape the future.

This free one-day event for year 9 and 10 students features three practical workshops in our world-class engineering labs, guest speakers and a site visit to see engineering in action.

We run this event in Terms 1, 2 and 3.

Real Research days

Real Research days are designed to expose year 10-12 students to cutting-edge research and motivate them to seek technical careers in STEM.

This immersion will lead to mentoring relationships and partnerships between researchers and students that will support them through their own school-based extended experimental investigations and research tasks.

Students who are inspired by these research projects will be able to apply for a holiday internship with QUT researchers, to further their interest in STEM careers.

Forums and competitions

We organise and host regional competitions such as the Science and Engineering Challenge, First Lego League and the RACI titration competition.

We also run localised events for national programs including Siemens Science Experience, National Youth Science Forum and Australian Youth Aerospace Forum.

STEM teacher professional development

We offer practical workshops and seminars for STEM teachers to enhance their existing knowledge and foster productive partnerships with QUT. Workshops aim to support teachers through their transition to the National Curriculum by providing STEM-related expertise, technologies, and resources.

STEM teachers breakfasts

By pooling knowledge and resources, we are committed to producing leading STEM professionals and teachers for the future. We invite STEM teachers to share best teaching practices, and explore the potential for innovation and collaboration during a breakfast held each semester.

Science and Engineering for partner schools in the widening participation program

We offer on-campus and off-campus school programs to support QUT's partner schools identified as being under-represented groups, with a particular emphasis on low income, rural and Indigenous students. We are dedicated to increasing enrolments from students who may not feel that they have the opportunity to study at university.

Since 2010 we've worked with schools in Caboolture and Brisbane's north to build aspiration for tertiary study in science, technology, engineering and maths. Through our interactive, engaging programs we aim to demystify university for students, particularly those who would be the first in their family to attend.
