About the school
Mathematics occupies a core intellectual position at QUT, an institution that is well known for its real world leadership in Science and Engineering. The Mathematical Sciences School is an innovative and thriving centre of excellence, committed to providing teaching and research of the highest quality.
Our research
The School of Mathematical Sciences is a highly collaborative group with a focus on cross-disciplinary research of high quality and impact to solve real world problems of global significance.
Our research capabilities are matched by our reputation for delivering practical education, ensuring work-ready graduates and post graduate and doctoral programs which are aimed at results for the economy through business and industry.
Our research portfolio covers:
- applied and computational mathematics
- decision science
- statistical science
A key to the school's research success is the diversity of mathematical skills we offer and the capability to link these skills in novel ways across the university, and with government and industry.
In the 2010 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) exercise undertaken by the Commonwealth Government, the quality of our research capability was assessed at '4 out of 5' or 'above world standard' in Mathematical Sciences.
A feature of QUT's ambitious research agenda is to foster cross-disciplinary, thematic, institute-based research. The school has strong, existing research collaborations with the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI) and when construction is completed, our research will underpin the thematic and interdisciplinary research undertaken in the Science and Engineering Centre.

Industry engagement
Our School of Mathematical Sciences is entrusted with large research projects from leading international and national organisations. These are either directly funded by the industry partner, or leverage third-party funding, for example as part of an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage grant or within a Collaborative Research Centre (CRC). The projects range from short-term consultation and advice to long-term industry-funded scholarships.
The core of our industry engagement is research and research training activity underpinned by long-term partnerships with government and industry. Our scope of application is inclusive: ranging from mathematical biology through climate change to engineering, economics and finance.
Industry Doctoral Training Centre
With our Australian Technology Network (ATN) of universities partners, we have established an Industry Doctoral Training Centre (IDTC) in Mathematics and Statistics. Through this centre, the school is delivering a commitment to engage with industry by identifying the needs of industry and business partners and then delivering both research solutions and a research workforce to fulfil these needs.
We understand that high quality research must deliver results to benefit industry and business. We are committed to solving real world problems, advancing technologies, identifying efficiencies, and working with and for you by introducing the ATN IDTC (Mathematics and Statistics).
